Councils are doing nothing to enforce rules on wood burning stoves despite domestic wood-burning now being ahead of traffic as the biggest source of air pollution

How to tackle the extreme #AirPollution caused by solid fuel burning.
Some aspects, such as the use of peat are a fairly specific Irish issue but this thread is relevant in villages, twins and cities across Europe.
Many people asked what could be done about the extreme #airpollution in #Ireland over the weekend. Was there any alternative to #solidfuels, esp. as the fire is such an ingrained habit? And is it worth making a fuss about a little bit of air pollution?
Let’s explore…

My interview for @bbcworldservice on the 70th anniversary of London's great smog that led to the deaths of around 12,000 people.
They have no memorial.
Here I talk to Marnie Chesterton (@amsterdammed) about my dad's experience of the smog as a young Londoner.
#OnThisDay For a week at the beginning of December 1952, London was under a blanket of deadly smog.

A temperature inversion and no wind reveals the extent of pollution emitted on these islands. The largest contributor to air pollution in the evening is wood and other solid fuel burning.
The map of shame for councils and politicians.

How green are newly planted urban trees?
Study of 30cm girth trees planted in Sweden shows on average it takes 16 years to absorb carbon emissions (mostly fuel) used in cultivation, delivery & planting
Strengthens the case for retaining existing trees
