The European adder is the UK's only venomous snake, it is under a huge amount of threat in the UK.

A telling reminder of littering's impact on wildlife. This little male sand lizard was very lucky we came across it whilst surveying. The other wasn't so lucky. As well as posing a fire risk, discarded bottles can be a death trap for small animals, so take your rubbish home folks

Pheasants have a massive impact on reptiles and will fatally injure adders and leave them to die... as they are released on adder sites, it’s another major factor believed to be driving their declines 😞

@RSPBMinsmere @RSPBintheEast Please respect these sensitive #reptiles as they emerge🐍watch from a respectful distance to avoid disturbing them as they need to bask to help facilitate reproduction👍females only breed every 2-3 years so need their space🙂 @reptileproject @AdderAid

The British Herpetological Society has finally joined Twitter! Thank you to everyone for all the follows already. Our friend and keen herpetologist Steve Allain will be managing the account, with occasional help from me, Chris Gleed-Owen (BHS Chairman).

Do join in and create an adder stone! Paint any stone with a nice adder design using acrylic paint, spray with clear varnish (optional), write @AddersAmazing and/or the FB link in marker on the back and place on an adder spot near you! 😀🐍
Public perception can pose a huge barrier to species #conservation, and sadly the #adder is affected by this. The @AddersAmazing project is working to change this through public engagement and #education. Could you make an ‘adder stone’ and pass on the message near you?

Did you know? The adder lives on heaths, moors and woodland rides.

I remember back in the 1960s that adders were common. I used to enjoy finding them, even on roadside verges in some places in West Wales I know, but those days are long gone! #Snakes and #Adders!
This is a twitter account set up for a uni project that I am doing, the project is a campaign to raise awareness about the European adder in the UK and the threats that they are facing. I will be posting pictures, articles and fun facts about adders so please take a look!

Did you know? The smooth snake is so-called because its scales are smooth unlike those of an adder or grass snake which have a ridge down the middle.
