Saturday spotlight💫: Dietary omega-6 lipids drive aberrant tissue repair in #obesity: doi.org/10.1172/JCI205829
🧵 1/2| Obesity is linked to impaired healing, including #HeterotopicOssification (HO), or bone formation, at the injury site. Benjamin Levi & team @UTSW_Surgery implicate dietary #Omega6 lipids in this elevated risk for HO.

Not all #bone-marrow stromal cells are equally good at forming bone. Across 26 donors, higher #ITGA11 levels marked cells with greater bone-forming potential. Sorting by ITGA11 separated stronger from weaker bone-forming cells, suggesting a useful #marker for bone #regeneration.👇

The U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) wants to change a key step in the review process determining which research it funds, raising concerns about transparency and political interference.
Under the new proposal, NIH asserts in a notice posted on 14 August, applications’ numerical ratings would no longer be used for final funding decisions.

The #brain and #nerves directly control bone repair through three levels: central #hormones, peripheral pain signals, and local marrow chemicals. Understanding this neuro-bone chat could spark new therapies for #osteoporosis and fracture healing.👇

Excited to share our recent paper in @ScienceTM ! We highlight tendon-associated sensory nerves are not only pain-transmitting fibers, but also protective regulators of tendinopathic changes through FGF1 signaling. Thanks @AaronWJames_Lab. Check it out : science.org/doi/full/10.1126…
Congratulations to first author Dr. Manyu Zhu and team for their work in @ScienceTM 👏👏 Showing for the 1st time that sensory nerves protect against tendon degeneration! Work done @JohnsHopkins @JHUPath

Unwanted #bone growth in soft tissues after #trauma is driven by a protein switch called #PRMT6 that amplifies #inflammation. Targeting it early could prevent this disabling condition while preserving normal tissue repair, offering a precision therapy for injury patients.👇

The #spine contains a newly discovered network of lymphatic #vessels that drain brain fluid and control #inflammation. Rewriting long-held anatomy beliefs, this hidden pathway could unlock targeted therapies for #spinal diseases, #nerve damage, and chronic back pain.🥳

After menopause, bone-breaking cells become overactive because they get coated with sugar molecules. Stripping off this sugar could stop bone loss as effectively as estrogen but without hormone therapy's risks.👇

Long-term steroid use destroys hip joints by blocking blood flow and killing bone tissue. Understanding these cellular mechanisms offers targets for early intervention and prevention, potentially sparing patients from debilitating joint collapse and replacement surgery.😀

Bone cells sense how stiff their surroundings are through their microtubule skeleton, directing cell division. This reveals how physical forces guide cartilage repair, pointing to new treatments for joint injuries and osteoarthritis.🧐

A bone-strengthening hormone (PTH) relieves chronic back pain by reversing spinal bone thickening and blocking painful nerve growth. This suggests repurposing an existing osteoporosis drug to treat age-related spine degeneration in humans.🧐
