If I were launching a services business today, here are the 10 tools I'd use to hit $1M in year one: 1. @n8n_io - Build an AI workforce. Automate proposals, client onboarding, reporting. We saved 20 hours/week on repetitive tasks within month one. 2. @SpaceChenst (Good Operator) - Your outsourced finance department. Real-time P&L by client, cash flow forecasting, and fractional CFO guidance. Know your margins before they know you. 3. @NotionHQ - Operating system for everything. Client wiki, project tracking, SOPs, team knowledge base. Start with templates, customize as you scale. 4. @WisprFlow - Dictate proposals/emails/anything. 3x faster than typing. Perfect for busy founders. 5. @useMotion - Calendar that thinks. Auto-schedules tasks around client meetings, ensures nothing drops. Like having an EA before you can afford one. 6. ContactOut - Find decision-makers fast. Email and phone for any LinkedIn profile. Turn cold outreach warm by reaching the right person immediately. 7. @TallyForms - Beautiful forms with conditional logic, payment collection, and Notion integration. Goodbye, Google Forms. 8. @loom - Async communication superpower. Record SOPs once, use forever. Client updates in 2 minutes vs 30-minute calls. 9. @mixpanel - Track what matters. Which services drive retention? What's your client LTV? Data-driven decisions from day one. 10. @mercury - Banking that scales. Virtual cards for each client project, expense management built-in. Clean books from the start. What should I add to this list?

If I had $0 and a brand new start up I wanted to reach $10k MRR, I’d do this: - set up social listening, go plug your product every time someone mentions problem it solves try - write one article a week that’s seo friendly and geo friendly. BUT also works in objection handling - make one video on same topic for YT - set up email capture with @kit - write weekly email for subs - plan content on LI, X etc written weekly - make 2-3 short form weekly on IG/TiktoK/shorts - follow the @orenmeetsworld @landforce playbook - outbound messages to your customer on LinkedIn with @AWHutton - use that outbound to book calls + learn what angles resonate - set up google search ads for your brand and very long tail keywords Do this for 3 months - track it. It can be done In 2-3 hours a day. Voila

I did a consulting call today with a 33 year old guy who makes $150k a year at a fully remote job. 30-40 hrs a week. 2 kids + wife. This is a really tough spot to be in. Makes $2k a month more than he spends every month. Zero chance at long term wealth but too easy and profitable to leave. Golden handcuffs. It takes a serious level of ambition to get out of this situation and go buy or start a company. It’s hard to get excited about scraping and fixing toilets or power washing sidewalks when you make $75 an hour at your day job. And it’s impossible to feel comfortable buying a company if you don’t start out lower and work your way up (with that stuff that isn’t exciting when you get a taste of decent money). Difficult stuff.

Relatively uncommon POV: I encourage founders to take a little money off the table early — as early as Series A It’s not just good for them and their families. It’s good for the company too When a founder has some personal financial security, they are: -Less likely to feel pressure to take the first acquisition offer -More willing to make bold, long-term bets -Better aligned with us and our LPs on building something enduring Letting them de-risk just a little can unlock the mindset required to build a generational company

After almost a decade, the @alt_MBA is winding down. When Seth Godin and I launched the first cohort in May 2015, I never imagined it would spark the beginning of a new category of online learning, be a beacon for thoughtful leaders hungry to do their best work, and one day reach over 7,000+ participants from 100+ countries. Personally getting to serve the first few thousand students in our early cohorts was some of the most meaningful work of my career. I'm literally a different person for it--stronger, faster, better, but also more thoughtful, brave, and self-aware. I thought I would feel sadder about the altMBA closing its digital doors. But I realized I don't feel too sad because while our last cohort is coming up this month, the altMBA lives on. It's thriving in the thousands of alumni ruckusmakers around the world who have already been transforming their work, industries, projects, and the people they work with for years. They've already been challenging, probing, and making things better, and will continue to do this. All the people our alumni have touched have felt the impact of the altMBA too. So today is bittersweet, but mostly I feel grateful for this brilliant community, for all our students, alumni, coaches, and team. For Seth, @alxpck, Sam, JaLeesa, Maya, Kelli, Willie, Marie, Ishita, Fraser, Paul, Melissa, Kat, and many more. I'm proud of you, and proud to know you. Here's to the impact altMBA alumni are already making and will continue to make in the wild. If you’ve been wanting to experience the altMBA, the deadline to apply for our last cohort is April 14! The program starts on April 22.

I think you need a “sales” mindset vs a “marketing” mindset Marketing is getting in front of your customer with an ad/pitch Sales is engaging, learning about their problem, and framing your solution Do the things that don’t scale

We’ve Rebranded ✨ I'm excited to share that Startup Founder Daily (@founder_daily) is now StartupStage. We’ve grown a lot in 2023. As we grew, we felt that the name “Startup Founder Daily” no longer captured who we are and where we’re headed. More details on the origin of the original name and why we’re rebranding below, but here’s a TL;DR – Why StartupStage? The name works on two levels: Your startup, our stage → We are a platform to showcase your startup and get eyes on what you’re building Stage = Competition → The name highlights the competitive nature of our voting platform. Startups compete for features across our platforms A huge thanks to all of you who have been with us from the beginning. For those of you who have recently joined our journey, here’s our origin story 👇️ I’m Luke, the Founder of StartupStage. I’m a startup lawyer based in Chicago. The Origin Story In January of 2022, I was looking for ways to get more plugged into the startup ecosystem. Twitter seemed like a good place to begin, so I started a little account giving shoutouts to founders. It was a fun way to meet new people and learn about the next great companies being built. This seemed to resonate with the community, and the account began to grow. I realized it could be more than a solo Twitter account, so I built out a company around it. I brought my Brother-in-Law, Henry Allen, on board to help me expand to other platforms. Back then, I envisioned the company as a “Humans of New York” for startup founders, telling the stories of the founders behind up-and-coming companies. The “Daily” in Startup Founder Daily was supposed to be reminiscent of the classic newspaper company. We continued to share stories about new companies and the founders behind them. As we listened to feedback from our audience, the focus of our features became more startup-focused than founder-focused. (I still think a “Humans of New York” for Founders would be cool – someone please build this!) For the next 12 months, we featured 3 companies per week across our blog, socials, and newsletter. Founders would submit their information, and once a week I would sit down and pick my favorite companies to feature. The Voting System In February of 2023, I came up with an idea to get the community more involved in the selection process. I pictured a platform where the startup community could vote on their favorite companies, which we would then feature across our platforms. Plus, I hoped the gamification added that boost of virality to take us to the next level. I am extremely non-technical. Lawyers are about the farthest thing from developers. Still, I set about building a rough MVP of the voting platform. It was a simple “update live item” Zapier automation through our Webflow site. I was hoping to get a few dozen votes that first week. We ended up getting over 500. I had to upgrade my Zapier account thee times to handle the tasks. But there were a lot of issues with the rudimentary system: It looked terrible. We couldn’t screen for fake or duplicate email addresses. We even had some people vote with celebrity email addresses. I think Brad Pitt has better things to do than vote on our platform. Nevertheless, I saw a lot of potential in the voting platform. After three weeks, I considered the idea sufficiently validated, found a dev shop (thanks @VermillionSky), and began building the platform. On June 26th, we officially launched our first cohort. We’re full steam ahead on this new approach, but started to feel we had outgrown our old name. There was nothing “Daily” about what we are doing, and the emphasis has shifted to the companies themselves rather than the founders. So after much deliberation, we are now StartupStage. New name, same mission to increase access to startup PR and put a spotlight on the next unicorn companies. We have big plans, and hope you’ll be along for the ride.

Caught a few minutes of @AWHutton speaking for @worldofwomennft. It was super insightful. I liked his take on focusing on entrepreneurial activities vs classic startup entrepreneurs. Think people writing books, launching a podcast, starting a community, growing an agency. His experience running @DayOneD1 has led him to focus on “expanding the definition of founder”. A worthy cause. Gathering a diversity of advice is important. In my experience working with founders across tons of consumer facing industries, you learn more from differences than similarities. Good stuff Andrew!
