Great to meet with the Anti‑Trafficking and Labour Exploitation Unit today and the lobby day on Earned Settlement. I share their concerns about the government’s plans, including retrospective rules, and spoke about them at the Westminster Hall debate the other week. There must be no retrospective changes for people who are already living lawfully in the UK and I will continue to press the government on this.

Today is a dark day for anyone who believes in sanctuary in the UK.
People who've fled war and torture should be able to rebuild their lives in security - not live in constant fear of removal.
We must not stop fighting these anti-refugee laws.

Refugee families who have survived war and persecution will now face uncertainty every 30 months, stopping them from putting down roots and settling into communities.
Our analysis also shows this new workload will cost up to £725 million over the first 10 years.

People have enough of this cruelty 😡😡😡
Today's announcement that, after today, people seeking asylum in the UK will be kept in long-term limbo creates unreasonable hurdles against integration and recovery for people who have already lost so much.

Protection should mean the chance to rebuild your life in safety. Refugees have already lost home and community. What they need next is stability.
Instead, this government is putting a countdown on their safety - deliberately keeping people in limbo.

This is what happens when you destroy safe routes. When your only response to people needing to flee their homes is hostility, hostility and more hostility.
Even more dangerous journeys. Even more deaths. That's it.

How can you settle or work when you might be sent back to the country you fled after just 30 months?
And how will a country already struggling with a huge asylum backlog process millions of new case reviews every year?
This heartless policy makes no sense.

It is well evidenced that short-term immigration status makes it harder to secure work and to challenge poor conditions of work.

People fleeing war and oppression are being pushed into dangerous journeys because safe and legal routes are being shut down.
In the last three months of 2025, there was a 35% drop in people granted protection through resettlement schemes, compared to 2024.

This was the safe route that allowed refugee children, parents, and spouses to reunite in safety.

For years, politicians have insisted that scapegoating people seeking sanctuary & throwing migrant communities under the bus is the only way to win.
Yesterday proved what we already knew: people are far kinder and wiser.
Our communities stand together. Politicians: take note.

Another harrowing reminder of why asylum hotels are not suitable for anyone.
Community accommodation is safer, more dignified and far, far cheaper than either hotels or military camps. Everyone deserves a real home in a community.

This is significant news, given that the vast majority - reportedly 70% - of such trawlers are crewed by migrant workers. These workers face poor and dangerous working conditions, alongside low wages and limited-to-no labour market enforcement.

Some amazing people in here including our very own, and very excellent, Dr Allan Njanji.
Amid all the dangerous policy and hateful rhetoric we're facing, it's worth taking a moment to celebrate the brilliant folk standing up for the right to seek safety.

I’m campaigning against unfair changes to Indefinite Leave to Remain.
I delivered a letter to the Home Office signed by @AndreaEganGS, 70+ parliamentarians and 33 civil society groups.
These plans will divide communities and damage services.
Ministers must think again.
