Maldives pays more in interest than on policing, justice and child and family protection combined and interest has grown almost twice as fast since 2019.

In 1995, Maldives had about 15 children for every person aged 65+. By 2022, this had fallen to about 5. It's projected to fall further to 1.0 by 2047 and 0.5 by 2062.
In 2026, Maldivians aged 65+ are projected to outnumber children under 5 for the first time.

To be precise, the MDP govt (2018-2023) granted citizenship to 28 individuals, both male and female, who had been living in Maldives and married to Maldivians.
Some have children; others have grandchildren.
Some have lived here for more than 42 years.

Maldivian citizenship has been granted to foreigners for decades. This is done in accordance with the Citizenship Act (Act No. 4/69), which mandates strict requirements including twelve years of continuous residency, marriage to a Maldivian citizen, good conduct, and proficiency in language tests.
Granting citizenship to foreigners and allowing foreigners to own land in Maldives are two different things in legal context.
Now the issue in question is, giving freehold rights to foreigners (allowing to own land).
From what I know, Maldivian citizenship has been granted to foreign nationals under both PPM and MDP administrations, where they meet the naturalisation requirements.
I’m waiting for the government to either deny this or speak against it. From what I understand, a draft law allowing foreigners to own land has already been prepared by this government and submitted to the Cabinet by Housing Minister Muttalib.
A citizenship law/regulation is drafted and ready to submit to AG/PO by my good friend @em_saeed
Even more surprising developments may be ahead.
In 2023, I sent information requests to UK and New Zealand asking about Indian military presence there.
This was around the same time journalists were asking Maldivian government similar questions.
Both countries responded and provided the information. Here are their replies.
Copy of the MoU between Maldives and Estonia on political consultations, provided by Estonian government in response to my information request. Good transparency. Thank you @EstonianGovt.
Hopefully Maldives will get there too, in time.

Pretty amazing. MIT’s new SCIGEN tool can steer AI to design materials with the right geometric patterns for quantum properties. Instead of random stable compounds, it generates candidates that could unlock quantum computing, superconductors and more.

Summary: When wealth and value gaps widen, populism rises, democracies weaken and people increasingly seek autocratic leaders who expand government control over markets, central banks and the economy to restore order. This weakens checks and balances.

WAMCO will remain underfunded forever unless fees match service costs. Guesthouses/businesses generate more waste per capita, so reprice contracts to true costs and improve efficiency instead of guesthouse ventures. Leverage existing mandate to stay profitable. It’s achievable.

Lobsters look huge for US politics but tiny for Europe. That’s the secret of trade deals. Give your partner something that matters a lot to them, but costs you almost nothing.
In trade, the smartest concessions are symbolic, not costly.

The key takeaway is that domestic violence echoes across generations, through behaviours, silences and emotional patterns children absorb. But by retelling and reframing these stories, families can pass down resilience and joy instead of inherited harm.
