Safe roads should be treated as a right, not a gift bestowed (or denied) by a local councillor. Our process is the problem, promoting endless debate on issues that should be beyond question. We propose a new process. Here's our op ed. spacing.ca/toronto/2024/03/2…

Just a reminder that this is coming to a standing committee on March 27. It is likely to come to full city Council in April.
On Mar 27, the city will vote on converting a short stretch of Avenue Rd to a more people-friendly street after 65 yrs as a dangerous 6-lane motorway. Let’s not squander this generational opportunity! @DianneSaxe @McKelvieTO @MikeColleTo @PerruzzaTO @CllrAmberMorley @PasternakTO

"even though Avenue Rd is designated as an arterial, more people (including residents of seniors’ homes, apts above shops + in the burgeoning # of residential towers) live along this 2.1-km segment than on any local side-street" @JoshMatlow @DianneSaxe

Some interesting charts in @GraphicMatt lastest newsletter (this one is free to view, btw). Tracking the city's intersection traffic counts - the heaviest pedestrian (and overall) last year was Yonge and College. Queen West, Kensington Market, Cabbagetown most pedestrian areas.

"In short, there is no reason to fear a safer Avenue Rd. In fact, it should serve as another success story for a city ready to address urgent problems of road safety +climate change."

“Traffic” isn’t the priority here John John. If you choose to driver or have to drive, fine enough. But that won’t qualify you to be a priority over the safety of vulnerable road users. These roads will be transformed in to complete streets so no matter your mode, you’ll be safe. – at Toronto, Ontario

First they got rid of the streetcars on Avenue Road. Then they narrowed the sidewalks and widened the traffic lanes. All to benefit the single-occupant autos, who do not stop at any of the shops, businesses, or services along Avenue Road.

A 6 lane expressway running through a downtown neighbourhood is unsafe. We need two lanes transitioned to pedestrians usage.

6-lane portion of Avenue is an example of how not to do things the Dianne Saxe way. "There’s a tiny broken sidewalk, cars racing in both directions. There’s no trees, nowhere to sit...I can tell you how hard it was to push my late husband...in a wheelchair, up and down that hill"

"A driver’s trip taking a few more minutes because of bike lanes or traffic should be considered far less significant than ensuring the safety and lives of bike riders." #BikeTO thestar.com/opinion/letters-…
