As I polish up my resubmission, I also reflect on the 'mistakes' of my initial CIHR project grant. If a limerick can ever be a mistake...
Two surprises hiding in our latest! (1) How broadly effective Piperacillin is at synergizing with temperate phages. Maybe a reason PTZ is so effective? (2) Our inability to correlate any likely predictors of tPAS to actual synergy. journals.asm.org/doi/10.1128…
"Now that you've reviewed for us for free, would you also complete this short survey on the review process that will only take 12-15 minutes?"
Dr. @rabiafatima_ has "tPASsed". Too many feels. Thank you @implosian - sorry you couldn't make it for the presentation of the warhammer. I do get asked if I fear the graduates will use them against me... no! Not in public, anyway - they're all far too smart to get caught.
Another double-podium finish for the Hynes Lab! The costume is a bit of an in joke/homage to @Yingfu8888, while the pumpkins... well, I'd say they speak for themselves, although having "Bye Bye Bye" playing out of the speaker added a nice touch.
The night before NoR. Last week at @CSM_SCM2024 I met many fantastic researchers in this competition, in the same panel. And for 85% of us, tomorrow is going to suck. What's the better way forward?
A picture is worth 1536 plaque assays. While we used a robot, we also tried a dirt-cheap 3D-printed alternative which works wonders at 384-density. I really believe this pre-print has the potentially to be the largest impact I will make on my field.

I'd love for some of you who have done massive screens (@baym, @AHarms485, for example) to give this a look. It's a really simple concept, and works *way* better than I thought it would. I never expected we could see plaques at this resolution.

If you've induced phages, you may have wondered if you can do the opposite: block entry into lysogeny. You can, using protein synthesis inhibitors! This yields a potent synergy, functionally turning a temperate phage into a virulent one. @APHage_ #mBio journals.asm.org/doi/10.1128…

That's one impressive host range, and not even in the top 5 coolest things about this story.
Replying to @implosian
For example, the prototypical IncP plasmid-dependent phage PRD1 has a very generalist host range, and can infect most g-proteobacteria carrying an IncP plasmid. PRDcerulean is 95% identical to PRD1 but has a very narrow host range, mostly restricted to Pseudomonas (4/ )
Et de deux! @DNADoubleFelix presenting the spoils of his PhD - Warhammer, Phage-Planters, and DNA. Oh, and a Thesis, I suppose. A masterful defence, a wonderful external @jwmodell... and there goes the last of the lab's starting cohort. *sniff*.
Ladies, Gentlemen - I present to you the first PhD out of the Hynes Lab - congratulations Dr. Al-Anany!

Oh dear. it looks exactly like what I would scribble if I were asked to draw a JAK-STAT pathway in an exam today. Uncanny.

The Hynes Lab Halloween! Even with a song and routine, we couldn't overthrough the reigning champion Li Lab in the costume contest, although we did claim victory in the Pumpkins!

I don’t get this whole “correlation is not causation” thing. Every time I see a correlation, it seems to be causative.
