Why is there such obsession with extending lifespan when the bigger issue is that average healthspan is 65 years and there are no data (except in super-centenarians) that longer lifespan = longer healthspan (known as compression of morbidity)?

With today's launch of “A Giant Leap,” there’ll be lots of great podcasts on which I discuss AI and healthcare. Two today:

Really enjoyed this convo with Graham Walker, ED doc & inventor of MDCalc, on his "How I Doctor" podcast. Graham's comment that, when he's crossing a SF intersection, he worries more when he sees a car with a driver coming than a Waymo has stuck with me.

AI doesn't need to be perfect to outperform our healthcare system's woeful status quo. It just needs to be better.
In many cases, it already is.
In today's @nytimes, I explore this idea – a central theme of my upcoming book, A Giant Leap (out Feb 3).

A very exciting book day in my household – on the same day I received my copy of @ZekeEmanuel's new book (which I'm psyched to read), a pre-pub copy of my new book showed up as well. Mine will be publicly available on Feb 3, but available for pre-order now.

Whenever the media asks about the longevity industry, I believe this point must be made clearly — by me and by everyone working in this field:
Until ageing is formally recognised as a disease, it will continue to create unnecessary and unjustifiable barriers — regulatory, financial, and even narrative. This ambiguity distorts how longevity-focused therapies are viewed, both by society and by professionals across the pharmaceutical ecosystem. It’s time to end this uncertainty once and for all. Ageing — and the diseases it drives — remain the leading killers on Earth. Humanity has already faced similar delays with the long-overdue recognition of obesity as a disease, and it should have learned that lesson.
Maxim Kholin, Co-founder, Gero highlights the need for clearer approval pathways. "For longevity biotech to thrive, we need clearer pathways for therapies that don’t fit neatly into today’s categories (preventive vs therapeutic). We should recognise ageing as a disease and agree on the biomarkers of ageing that will serve as surrogate endpoints for therapies approval."

A study reveals that extreme heat accelerates biological aging even more than smoking or drinking.
A new study shows that repeated extreme heat exposure accelerates biological aging, increasing risks of disease and early death.
Tracking 25,000 Taiwanese adults over 15 years, researchers found just four extra heatwave days in two years aged people biologically by nine days, up to 33 days for outdoor laborers.
Scientists warn heat’s long term damage rivals smoking, alcohol, and poor diet, making climate action and public health measures critical to protect vulnerable populations.
