On 8 July 2026, at the Population Technical Working Group (PTWG) Expanded Stakeholder Debriefing and Strategic Engagement Meeting in Abuja, Sadiq Malami, Budget and Communications Specialist at the Africa Health Budget Network (AHBN), represented Dr. Aminu Magashi Garba, Coordinator of AHBN, during a high-level panel discussion on the imperative of convening the National Council on Population Management (NCPM).
During the discussion, he emphasized that Nigeria's rapidly growing population, coupled with rising insecurity, unemployment, climate change, urbanization, and increasing pressure on health, education, and other public services, requires coordinated leadership at the highest level. He further called for the establishment of a high-level follow-up task team to support the National Population Commission in sustaining engagement on its formal request to Mr. President by leveraging strategic government offices and key champions to facilitate the convening of the Council.
As Nigeria continues to navigate complex demographic and development challenges, stakeholders agreed that translating existing policy frameworks into coordinated action is now imperative. Convening the National Council on Population Management would provide the leadership platform needed to drive that action.

Wednesday, 15 July 2026 โ As part of activities under the Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC) Project Nigeria, the Africa Health Budget Network (AHBN), led by its Coordinator, Dr. Aminu Magashi Garba, held a strategic engagement with High Chief Barr. Emeka Nwala, Chairman of the National Assembly Legislative Aides, to follow up on the status of the Electric Vehicle Transition and Green Mobility Bill, 2025, sponsored by His Excellency, Distinguished Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, CON.
The engagement focused on the progress of the Bill, which has successfully passed its First and Second Readings in the National Assembly, while exploring opportunities to align ongoing policy development efforts with the proposed legislation in support of Nigeriaโs transition to cleaner and more sustainable transportation systems.
The Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC) Project Nigeria is supporting the development of a National Policy and National Implementation Plan for Soot-Free Buses, including Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and Electric Vehicle (EV) buses, as part of efforts to reduce air pollution and promote cleaner mobility solutions. As part of this process, the project is engaging key government institutions and stakeholders, including the Presidential CNG Initiative (Pi-CNG), to promote policy coherence and alignment with existing and emerging national initiatives. The engagement with the National Assembly Legislative Aides therefore provided an important opportunity to explore areas of convergence between the proposed policy framework and the Electric Vehicle Transition and Green Mobility Bill.
The discussions were constructive, with High Chief Barr. Emeka Nwala expressing his support for the initiative and committing to a follow-up technical meeting to jointly review the draft policy and identify areas for strategic alignment with the proposed legislation.
The delegation also included Hon. Muhammad Usman, Amina Haladu, and Sadiq Malami.

Tuesday, 14 July 2026 โ The Africa Health Budget Network (AHBN), led by its Coordinator, Dr. Aminu Magashi Garba, paid a strategic engagement visit to Dr. Alain E.M. Damiba, Regional Director/Managing Director for North, West and Central Africa at FP2030. Also present was Yusuf Nuhu, Advocacy, Accountability and Partnership Manager, NWCA Hub, FP2030. During the meeting, Dr. Damiba commended AHBN's contributions to advancing family planning in Nigeria, particularly its advocacy for increased government funding for family planning commodities and its work on budget tracking to promote transparency and accountability in the utilization of released funds.
Discussions focused on strengthening coordination across the various financing streams supporting family planning in Nigeria, including government and development partner contributions, to improve alignment, tracking, and overall effectiveness. Both teams also deliberated on persistent challenges, particularly family planning commodity stockouts and fragmented financing, and agreed on the need to support the development of a coordinated overview of all partners and funding supporting family planning commodity procurement to enhance transparency, accountability, and resource coordination.
The meeting further agreed that findings from the Motion Tracker Approach (MTA) would be leveraged to support FP2030's annual country self-report. AHBN and FP2030 also reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening collaboration on subnational advocacy, with a focus on promoting routine budget allocations and timely releases for family planning and maternal, newborn, and child health programmes across Nigeria.

During our 2021โ2025 strategic period we set out with a goal to complete 82 routine vaccine introductions. Weโre proud to announce that we significantly surpassed that goal with 110 introductions over five years! In 2025 alone, Gavi supported 40 new routine introductions across eleven antigens. Many thanks to our country partners, Alliance partners and donors for making this possible and helping us reach more children with lifesaving vaccines.
At the ongoing 152nd @IPUparliament Assembly, amid a world facing converging crisesโconflict, climate shocks, financing crisis, economic hardships, and rising misinformationโone message is emerging: We cannot afford to lose the hard-won gains in the health of women, children, and adolescents.
At a High-Level Symposium of the Parliamentary Network for Womenโs, Childrenโs and Adolescentsโ Health inspired by the @GLN_Community convened by Angela Thokozile Didiza and supported by @PMNCH and Inter-Parliamentary Unionโparliamentarians came together to answer a critical question: How do we hold the line for womenโs, childrenโs and adolescentsโ health (#WCAH) in times of crisis?
Because the reality is stark: In fragile settings, women, children and adolescents are the first to lose access to essential servicesโand the last to regain them.
But there is also a path forwardโand it runs through parliamentary leadership.
๐ฌ A shared vision emerged:
This network is a platform for collective and urgent action โit is a mechanism to translate global commitments into real national action, through legislation, oversight, and budgets that protect the most vulnerable.
So what must happen now? The Parliamentary Network agreed on the following priorities:
๐น Scale up smarter, fairer financing
With urgency around domestic resource mobilization to sustain resilient health systems that care for women, children and adolescents
๐น Invest in the health and well-being of adolescents
Because their well-being today defines our collective future.
๐น Protect essential health servicesโeven in crisis
Parliaments must safeguard sexual and reproductive health, maternal, newbornย and child care, and community-based primary health care
There was strong consensus:
๐ The Parliamentary Network is a critical space for peer learning, collaboration, and accountability
๐ Parliamentarians are central to country-led solutions in the face of global instability
And importantlyโthis is just the beginning.
๐ Country experiences and progress in relation to financing their health sectors through domestic resources, including through the use of health taxation, will be shared at the 153rd IPU Assembly in Arushaโensuring momentum continues.
Because ultimately: There can be no peace and prosperity without the health and well-being of women, children, and adolescents. And there can be no health without peace.

26 February 2026; The Africa Health Budget Network (AHBN) team, led by Dr. Aminu Magashi Garba, paid an advocacy and technical engagement visit to the UNFPA Nigeria office in Abuja.
The AHBN delegation met with Dr. Ummulkulthum Bajoga, Family Planning Analyst, and Dr. Zubaida Abubakar, Gender/GBV Management Specialist, both of UNFPA Nigeria.
1. The meeting revealed that Nigeria is currently experiencing stock-outs of family planning commodities across all 36 states, with particularly severe shortages in the North-West region. These supply gaps pose a significant threat to the continuity of family planning service delivery nationwide.
2. Discussions to support advocacy for the Federal Government of Nigeria to fulfil its co-financing commitment for family planning for 2026.
3. The engagement underscored the urgent need for stronger strategic partnerships and sustained advocacy for resource mobilisation, involving the Federal Government, sub-national governments, and the private sector, to close financing and supply gaps.
4. AHBN also gained clearer insights into partner co-financing arrangements for family planning for 2025 and 2026, including donor allocations and releases into the National Family Planning Basket Fund.
The meeting concluded with a shared understanding that persistent stock-outs across all levels of the supply chain will severely limit service providersโ ability to deliver family planning services, threatening to reverse hard-won gains and undermining efforts to protect the health and rights of women, adolescents, and children in Nigeria.
This strategic meeting provided the impetus for AHBN to finalize its motion tracker data collection, report, and validation meeting in April 2026 as well as generate a series of advocacy messages that will collaboratively support the AHBN and partners to address family planning challenges in Nigeria.
