October is Italian-American heritage month. While it may be more pleasant to think of familiar characters like gregarious fat man Tony Soprano, there has always been a dark side to Italian immigration as well. No one exemplifies this better than Louis Prima.
The killer was motivated by a conspiracy theory alleging that Prima had been involved in the ousting of Mussolini from his own government in 1943. The US government responded by attempting to ban unlicensed theorizing, so far with limited success.
Those influenced by Prima include fanatical anarchist group The Marcels, with their infamous 1961 exhortation to “bomb b-b-bomb,” which tragically may have inspired Rock the Younger’s much later radical tract “Bawitdaba.”
