Said it before. Saying it again: the biggest mistake the US made is assuming schools and teachers needed only to be properly incentivized (or threatened). Changing practice, not policy, is where our focus should be.

This is the single most important difference between schools in the US & schools in England right now. A head teacher said to me: it's hard to find a newly qualified teacher these days who doesn't know about working memory, retrieval practice etc. what a sea change. and one that has absolutely not happened here in any way shape or form. the differences in knowledge of basic cogsci are STARK.

Patrice has done it again!!!!
(Oh, and it’s a bit surreal to find myself inside, when she’s influenced me so much; her first book being a gateway drug into science of learning practices.)

“You have to have explicit, systematic direct instruction in phonics. You have to have vocabulary complexity. You have to have knowledge coherence in the design of your units and lessons. And you have to write a lot in response to reading.”

🚨 New phonemic awareness study linked below👇🏼
And if you’re someone who says, “but I don’t teach PA without print… I always do a phonics lesson right after,” ….UMMM sorry to break it to you but that IS teaching PA without print.
Benefit to teaching *phonological awareness ALONE*?
Paper by @melissa_stalega with me and others about whether there is a benefit to teaching PA alone...
Basically:
Teaching PA: better PA
Teaching PA WITH letters: better PA AND better word reading.

Below is one of edutwitterx's all-time threads. I'm glad it resurfaced. People who have been inspired by it should listen to the educators who were there, on the ground in PFT, who are now in their 70s and older. It's a story that isn't to be missed!
