Beyond technical and scientific knowledge, ACVSS is also an opportunity to connect with scientists on the continent. This year, the open day united scientists from @UnivofGh, @Google Accra, independent researchers and more with our crowd of talented students.
Raesetje Sefala is an amazing human being. I thoroughly enjoyed our Sunday afternoon cuisine and tour of the huge University of Ghana’s Legon campus (my family’s association with that campus dates back to when my grandfather moved there in 1952), in #Accra, #Ghana’s capital.
Raesetje is an AI Research Fellow at The Distributed AI Research Institute (DAIR) and doctoral student at McGill University in #Montreal, #Canada. Her research focuses on creating ground truth datasets and using machine learning and other computational social science techniques to study the effects of spatial apartheid in South Africa, post-Apartheid. Her previous work involved partnering with various stakeholders and using machine learning techniques to study poverty and traffic safety in the urban parts of Nigeria and Jakarta, respectively.
She holds a computer science undergraduate and master's degree from the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg. She has been technically involved in different complex data science projects from around the world and her expertise range from creating ground-truth datasets, building machine learning models, analyzing and evaluating results for real-world problems with a societal #impact.
Ms. Sesfala has been in Accra facilitating the annual 10-day African Computer Vision Summer School (ACVSS) which aims to connect eager African students with prominent computer vision experts while imparting essential principles, ethical considerations, and the latest techniques in the field of computer vision. I’ve offered free consultation (lol) to add a good dose of #leadership thought and skills so these bright young people not only work IN systems and structures but get to work ON them as well, especially when and where #change is needed.
Raesetje rocks‼️

You perfectly captured ACVSS: an opportunity to learn from outstanding scientists worldwide, gain hands-on experience through practicals and the hackathon, interact with talented students—the future computer vision scientists—and… play the piano, of course. What a memory 🇬🇭🎹
For 10 unforgettable days, @ACVSS_AI brought together an incredible group of students, researchers, and world-class lecturers to learn, exchange ideas, and push the boundaries of computer vision.
From inspiring keynote talks and deeply engaging lectures to the hackathon, late-night discussions, and conversations over lunch, every part of the experience was thoughtfully designed to challenge and inspire us.
Beyond the technical knowledge, I gained something even more valuable: new friendships, mentors, collaborators, and a renewed excitement for AI research.
A huge thank you to the organizers, speakers, lecturers, mentors, volunteers, and every participant who made ACVSS such a special experience. Special thanks to @bonjora, @anuragarnab, Raoul de Charette, @deeptigp, @zamir_ar, @henokademtew, @AdamKortylewski, @AmrMAlameen, @wellingmax, and many others who so generously shared their knowledge and experiences
And beyond the classroom, I got to experience the warmth of Ghana, learn more about its rich history, and even play Kwame Nkrumah's piano - a moment I'll never forget. 🇬🇭
Here's a glimpse of an unforgettable 10 days. ❤️
Thank you to @deeptigp for the amazing lecture and for the rich interactions with all the students at ACVSS 26 Ghana.
🚀 The 3rd African Computer Vision Summer School (#ACVSS) officially started today at Google AICC, Accra, Ghana 🇬🇭! A packed 10-day program featuring an outstanding lineup of speakers from across the globe 🌍, with inspiring lectures, keynotes, mentoring, hackathon, and more.
📢 ACVSS deadline is extended by 10 days.

We look forward to ACVSS 2025 @ACVSS_AI . We started as a community to document inequities in Computer Vision research, github.com/Ro-ya-cv4Africa/a…. One of our goals was the summer school, and we are also looking forward to the first African wide faculty retreat .
Day 10. To close of the summer school lecture series concluded with an incredible session by our organizers @HelgeRhodin and Raoul de Charette, diving into 3D scene reconstruction and a deep dive into Pose estimation. What an inspiring end to an amazing journey! #ACVSS
Day 10. Alyosha Efros gave an amazing keynote, sharing his lifelong battle on the importance of visual data. His research journey and insights on how, with enough data, simple algorithms can outperform SOTA methods on some tasks were astonishing. #ACVSS
Day 9. Big thanks to Sara Beery (@sarameghanbeery) for her insightful lecture on reducing datasets bias and constructing deployable computer vision that, beyond benchmarks, also contribute to real-life conservation applications. Such an inspiring line of work. #ACVSS
Day 8. It was about time to add the temporal dimension. Big thanks to Hazel Doughty (@doughty_hazel) for her exciting lecture on video understanding, covering methods from optical flow to transformers for video. #ACVSS
Day 7. Camera Image Signal Processors (ISPs) are crucial to make image looks natural. We were lucky to welcome @mahmoudnafifi who gave a keynote on how to make learnable ISPs more reliable. #ACVSS
Day 7. "Sunday is fun day", he said. And that's true today; we're thrilled to learn about Vision and Language lectured by Yuki Asano (@y_m_asano). Yuki unraveled the intricacies of VLMs, MLLMs and how to fine-tune large models for novel tasks and datasets. #ACVSS
Day 6. Saturday, we went to the Nairobi National Park for a safari day. It seems like we forgot about computer vision and images for a day, but did we ? Somehow, everyone kept taking pictures. Don't worry, more lectures are coming up very soon😉 #ACVSS
Huge shoutout to the
@RoyaCV4Africa community where it all began during the Ro'ya
DLI workshop! Thanks @mennatullahSiam and @HelgeRhodin for leading also the mentorship session. The community support from Ro'Ya has been incredible. #ACVSS
