>1500 scientists from >100 countries agreeing in something is a very rare event. In this opinion piece we joined together to express that if biological nomenclature is not understood as a neutral tool, we put ourselves at risk . Let me explain why we had to organize this 🧵👇

Reaching 40,000 trees on the @IUCNRL would not have been possible without the hard work of all our Global Tree Assessment assessors, reviewers and contributors. A big thank you to everyone who has helped!

There is a need for greater conservation action for timber trees, with only 46% of threatened species found in ex situ collections. Case studies in #RedListofTimberTrees show what @BGCI gardens are already doing to help.

VicForests caught red-handed once again. We worked w/ @WOTCHinc to expose illegal logging of Tree Geebung in areas meant to be protected, during 'regeneration' works. More proof VicForests can't be trusted & must be wound up ASAP.

#Trees sustain life and enrich our lives, but we're losing tree diversity at an alarming rate.
This Special Issue highlights the Global Tree Assessment. A global effort is needed to protect trees for the benefit of plants, people and the planet.

In China, depletion of dipterocarps has occurred due to land use change. Regeneration is also kept at bay due to colonization of these fragmented patches by plants such as bamboos and wild bananas which causes increased mortality of existing seedlings and saplings in the area.

Enhancement of in situ conservation is needed to save dipterocarps, including expansion of current protected areas, sustainable forestry measures and rehabilitation efforts. (7/8)

142 tree species are already extinct in the wild, the extinction of a single tree species can alter an ecosystem substantially, causing a an ‘extinction cascades’, which would see the rapid decline of ecosystem functions.

It's amaizing it took more than a century to go from what is DNA to a full human genome ...
