My colleague at a hospital in Xinjiang was telling me how much time AI helps him with his job. A couple years ago he had no idea about how AI worked but the local government told him if he publishes any AI papers under the hospitals name he will get a big bonus. Then, if the hospital uses his AI he will get an even bigger bonus. That's why Chinese AI is moving so fast, the governments are heavily subsidising it and making people want to get involved. I just saw one Beijing hospital has already trialled > 20 types of robots with AI for heart scans, surgical planning and disease detection... it helps them speed everything up and also catch anything they might sometimes miss! Interestingly each city in China has a medical University which all collaborate with local hospitals. So the students get free data for their paper and the hospitals get top class research applied to their patients! Actually my PhD research got patented and then used by the local hospitals in Shanghai (not sure if it still is!) The UK has the NHS, offering enormous potential for nationwide adoption. America has a powerful medical technology industry and established regulatory pathways.. Which is great ofc, but the thing people miss is that inventing AI, approving AI and successfully USING AI are three completely different achievements. Nobody else comes anywhere close to China on AI at the moment and they've made it into a reliable healthcare for millions of patients.

Rishi Sunak (our former PM) is now warning Britain about China's dominance... The irony? He saw it coming, warned us WHILE he was Prime Minister, then made decisions that arguably weakened Britain's response hahaha. Now he wants to lecture us about Xi Jinping's strategy? Well, Xi DID openly discuss increasing foreign dependence on Chinese supply chains back in 2020. That's a legitimate concern. But as a Brit living in China, what frustrates me is how Sunak ignores Britain's OWN failures. Here in Xinjiang, Chinese EVs are everywhere. Even across Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, BYDs and Hongqis are increasingly common. Competition is BRUTAL, prices keep falling, and Beijing itself is trying to stop destructive price wars. Yes, subsidies and overcapacity are real problems. But China's success also reflects years of investment, innovation and manufacturing efficiency. And the ridiculous part is that Sunak warned against relying on subsidised Chinese cars back in 2023. Then, IN THE SAME SPEECH, delayed Britain's petrol/diesel phase-out by FIVE YEARS. He KNEW what was happening. Perhaps the bigger scandal isn't that China had an clever strategy, but that Britain had politicians who saw what was coming and STILL failed to respond effectively.
President Xi’s aim is to make the world dependent on China, while China depends on no one. Without a coalition of countries to counter it, he will succeed. thetimes.com/comment/columni…

Why do so many politicians talk about Xinjiang? You might be surprised to know a big reason is about energy and AI. Without Xinjiang, China's AI would not be as powerful and quick! China just began a really huge transmission project between Hami in Xinjiang with Chongqing. Basically it uses the power in Hami then within 16ms the signal is sent 2000km away to AI companies!!!Connectivity between rural areas with energy and AI centers is the thing that will absolutely win the AI race and China is perfect for it. Xinjiang itself, just one region of China has 167 GW of wind and solar, Japan has 99 GW, the UK has 54 GW. Insane levels. US data centres can wait up to 7 years queuing up for power!

The Next Frontier Where China Will Overtake the US: Biopharmaceuticals Chinese biopharmaceutical companies—including those focused on innovative drugs—have recently secured numerous high-value international technology partnership agreements (specifically "license-out" deals). They are experiencing a rapid, transformative rise, evolving from "low-cost suppliers" into "sources of global innovation." In the first half of 2026 alone, the licensing-out of Chinese innovative drugs demonstrated explosive momentum, with 81 deals concluded totaling approximately $110 billion—a figure representing about 80% of the entire previous year's transaction volume. R&D Pipeline Scale. By early 2026, China accounted for 31% of the global drug R&D pipeline. With over 1,250 new drugs under development, China has far surpassed the European Union's aggregate level and is rapidly closing the gap with the United States (which has approximately 1,440 drugs in development). Surpassing in R&D Investment. A report titled "Science and Technology Indicators 2026" by Japan's Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) indicates that China has, for the first time, surpassed the United States in total R&D investment to rank first globally (with 2024 investment reaching 97.1 trillion yen, or approximately 4.15 trillion RMB). Technological Platform Advantages. China has established a commanding lead in the field of antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs); by the end of 2025, domestic Chinese pharmaceutical companies accounted for 40%–50% of the global ADC clinical pipeline, ranking first worldwide. R&D and Clinical Trial Speed. Leveraging a vast patient population and an efficient industrial ecosystem, China is achieving R&D and clinical speeds three times faster than the West at half the cost; notably, in 2025, China conducted 55% of the world's oncology clinical trials. From a technological perspective, Chinese pharmaceutical companies have moved beyond merely imitating Western drugs ("fast-following"). Instead, by leveraging cutting-edge fields—such as monoclonal antibodies, bispecific antibodies, ADCs, GLP-1, and cell therapies—and adopting differentiated approaches (e.g., novel linkers and non-standard payloads), they have transformed from domestic "followers" into global "peers" and, in some areas, even "leaders." Multinational corporations (MNCs)—such as Pfizer, Merck & Co. (MSD), and GSK—have actively sought partnerships with Chinese firms, sparking a wave of "shopping-spree-style" collaborations: • Innovent Biologics and Pfizer (May 2026): The two parties signed a massive global collaboration agreement with a potential total value of up to $10.5 billion. Pfizer made an initial payment of $650 million, covering 12 early-stage oncology projects that include antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs) and multispecific antibodies. • 3SBio and Pfizer (May 2025): 3SBio granted Pfizer the global rights (excluding China) for the development, manufacturing, and commercialization of its proprietary PD-1/VEGF bispecific antibody, SSGJ-707. The deal featured a landmark upfront payment of $1.25 billion and a total transaction value of $6 billion, setting a new record for upfront payments in Chinese innovative drug business development (BD). • Hengrui Medicine and GSK (2025): The collaboration agreement reached between the two parties exceeded $12 billion in total transaction value, further highlighting the global appeal of established Chinese pharmaceutical leaders as they transition toward innovative drug development. • Innovent Biologics and Takeda Pharmaceutical (2025): The two companies entered into a major partnership with a total agreement value of up to $11.4 billion. • Pregene and Gilead Sciences (Kite Pharma, 2025): The two parties entered into a collaboration in the field of *in vivo* *in situ* editing therapies. The agreement, valued at a total of $1.64 billion, set a record for the highest-value out-licensing deal in China's *in vivo* CAR-T (cell therapy) sector.

Every accusation is a confession. For years, the West claimed Chinese scientific institutions were just political arms of the state. Now, the US is overhauling its own science funding to do exactly that. Between cutting science funding and playing political games with research, they are pushing innovators away, and places like China are well positioned to pick up the pieces.
My god, news so big that Nature(!) just made a whole article about how the US could destroy scientific research... The US are proposing a ‘vast overhaul’ of US science funding to make it all political. Completely defeating the purpose of unbiasedness in research! It basically means political appointees would get far more control over grants. Grants could be cancelled if they no longer fit “national interest”. There would also be tighter limits on international collaboration, publication costs, and even conference attendance. Insane! For years, people said China’s weakness was that it copied, followed plans, and lacked true innovation..but as I’ve studied and researched in China, I’ve seen how much China is pouring money into strategic science, engineering, AI, chips, biotech, energy, and advanced manufacturing. This cuts free speech in the most important area - science. Big big shame.

Recently, an independent British content creator Luke Johnston conducted street interviews in #Japan, where many local residents stated that they do not support Japan's involvement in the Taiwan issue. For most of those interviewed, the #Taiwan question remains an affair between the Chinese mainland and the Taiwan region alone. Many think that Japan should maintain a neutral stance, cherish peace and not provoke or begin any kind of war. They hope China and Japan could develop a more friendly relationship in the future. #streetinterview

Damn i might have just debunked some major China news on Covid. A NY politician’s aide is on trial for "harming" New York through China in the pandemic. As someone who worked in the UK in epidemiology, let me debunk this (a little technical but worth it) ⬇️ Right so, hospitals basically fight 2 kinds of epidemics: what you catch outside (R0c) and inside hospitals (R0h). Back to March 2020 in NYC, and the R0h was about 2.4 (means every infected nurse spread to 2–3 other co-workers) Now, a classic infection-control model all epidemiologists know: Re = R0h × (1 – PC × E) E is mask efficacy (0.9 for N95s). My goal would be to get Re < 1. PC is around 0.32 from PPE coverage (as nurses reuse masks, surgeons swapping gloves between cases etc) Plug that all in: Re = 1.74. This means geometric growth EVERY 5-days. If you kept the PC at 0.32 for two extra weeks: Statistical modelling (I used stochastic Monte Carlo...fancy simulation) shows 6,750 cases and 11 deaths!!!!!!! Now, go to 14th March… Hangzhou delivers 74 million respirators + gloves... PC goes to 0.81.. that means Re = 0.66 -> no more hospital outbreak!!! China saved so many American lives but now 5 years later are being blamed. Prosecutors in this trial must show financial or operational harm to New York, but this model shows harm runs the OPPOSITE way. Ridiculous and mathematically wrong.

BIG AI news! DeepSeek made a “tiny change” to their R1 model and now performance is JUST behind OpenAI’s o3 and Google’s Gemini 2.5. Whilst the US LLMs spent more and more money scaling it with more data, the Chinese side modified the model to use the same data, at a lower price. That’s what innovation and bright Chinese minds bring! Now that all US companies have got their best model out, there’s a bunch of rumors on Chinese social media, Weibo, that Deepseek will release their new model R2 next month. Imagine if a tiny change can almost beat US models, what a totally new model design will do? Lots of hype that Deepseek will produce the state of the art AI - and of course it will be all for free. China was waiting for the right moment to release this, when they can produce something to blow everyone away all for free. Gemini/OpenAI/Claude all offering “premium” deals at expensive prices, but this isn’t AI for everyone.. just the elite. China is literally providing the best AI for everyone to use. Not only that, but universities and companies can all use it too, which benefits society.

Holy moly, DeepSeek was cooking! They are almost on par with o3 and Gemini-2.5 pro! The theory that the last r1 update was actually r2 seems increasingly plausible!

BIG NEWS! Deepseek's R2 model to be released next Monday, and rumours in China that it's a totally new model which will blow the AI landscape again. BUT insanely, the US just put out news looking to silence it by setting an insane government ban on it. Are they worried about their own government using the best AI and realising it's better than US models?😂 Like DeepSeek is literally open source, its code can be scrutinised by the best coders to see if China are trying to hack them. It makes no sense!!!!😂😂
