The resignation of the Education Minister is an acknowledgment that accountability in a democracy cannot be indefinitely evaded. It comes after weeks of determined, peaceful voices raised by students, parents and citizens across the country who refused to be ignored. It also comes after far too many young Indians faced unnecessary police brutality and force for exercising their democratic right to peaceful protest. That should concern every citizen, regardless of political affiliation. But accountability does not end with a resignation. The deeper failures that brought us here must now be addressed through transparent reforms, institutional responsibility and a commitment to ensuring that no young Indian’s future is jeopardised again. The students who marched, spoke out and peacefully persisted deserve to know that this is the beginning of reform, not the end of the story.

Ken-Betwa Protest in MP – By tribals, against poor compensation & rehabilitation 3. Uttarakhand against Tree cutting – 3000 trees to be cut for Dehradun-Rishikesh highway, Rahul Gandhi met them. Yet Godi media is not covering any protest full-time.

Today it feels like that the efforts of alternate media houses and independent journalists getting us news from corners of the country, have not been in vain. As mainstream TV news got captured by government cronies, independent voices kept journalism alive. This summer, some households in Delhi decided to record what heat actually does to their lives, loss of income, missed work, dehydration cases, reduced mobility, water access, and more. Not with just ambient temperature, but through their own lived experiences. They recorded sleepless nights. They documented how rising temperatures increased stress, frustration, and conflict at home. They wrote about losing work and income because it became impossible to work outdoors. They described children struggling to study or complete homework in unbearably hot homes. They kept record of increasing electricity bills, medical expenses, and the many invisible impacts of heat that rarely appear in research papers or policy discussions. These stories, testimonies, and records became Garmi Khata, a community led people’s registry that aims to translate lived experience into evidence. What makes it powerful is its ownership. It is not a survey conducted from outside. It is a community maintained record that turns everyday experience into documented climate evidence. Yesterday, these households submitted their Garmi Khata to the NHRC, calling on it to acknowledge the human rights impacts of extreme heat and to recognise heat as a human rights issue that demands urgent action. I feel this opens up a larger discourse on how climate impacts are measured, whose data counts, and how communities are already building their own systems of accountability when official frameworks fall short.

Village communities in Tamil Nadu have successfully restored 38 traditional tanks and ponds that had dried up or silted over the years. Through Project Nanneer by the Murugappa Group, they desilted, deepened, and strengthened these water bodies, increasing their total storage capacity from 255 million litres to 370 million litres. This has helped raise groundwater levels, providing reliable water for drinking, irrigation, and livestock even in dry months. Farmers no longer need to dig very deep for water, and fallow lands are being cultivated again. The restored tanks also support more birdlife, native trees, and reduce flooding risks. Overall, these low-cost, community-led efforts are reviving a traditional water management system and improving lives in a sustainable way.

Why economic progress cannot fix India’s domestic gender gaps While education gaps are closing, a new study of 40k+ adolescents from @iitbombay shows that 75% of girls engage in domestic labour daily, while boys remain unaffected. For many girls, especially from SC/ST communities, the work day doesn't end when the school bell rings, but when the dinner plates are washed. We are really not prepared for the level of droughts and floods that will happen over the next 12-18 months. We have no idea the severity of what’s coming because we haven’t experienced something at this scale before.
With all the July model runs now in, it is very likely that 2026 will see the largest El Niño event since records began in the late 1800s – and potentially by a truly mind-blowing margin. The median estimate is now 3.6C, roughly 0.8C hotter than the prior record (2.75C).

Found a nice #AirPollution tool developed by @moefcc for informing public on the Air Pollution mitigation plan. Couldn't help but think that a Science Communicator hired by the team would add so much more to the tool's presentation of data - thereby participation of the public!

Small side note: Influenzas are attempting to re-introduce goiter by hyping up iodine-free sendha namak and "himalayan pink salt". Don't be stupid. Use iodized salt

Cities across India are investing in tree plantation drives. But are these efforts making our streets cooler and safer for the people who need them the most? Too often, urban greening is measured by the number of saplings planted rather than where they are planted. Enhancing tree cover across streets, footpaths, markets and other public spaces where people live, work and move is one of the most underused opportunities for urban climate adaptation and reducing the urban heat island effect. The Supreme Court’s recognition of the right to walk in June 2026 has reaffirmed the need for cities to provide safe and accessible pedestrian infrastructure. As streets are redesigned to uphold this right, it is equally important to ensure that people can move comfortably, particularly as temperatures rise. Why does the location of a tree matter as much as the number of trees planted? Read this article by CSE researchers Sugeet Grover and Nida Maryam, where they make the case for rethinking urban greening through the lens of climate resilience, walkability and public health: downtoearth.org.in/urbanisat…

I have only just begun reading "Fractured Communities" by Umar Khalid. Barely a few pages in, and there is already a quiet ache lodged in my throat. Some books do not merely invite us to read; they compel us to pause. It is difficult to separate the words from the silence that surrounds their author, a scholar whose life has remained suspended in incarceration, still awaiting not the completion but even the beginning of his trial. Every page seems to carry not only an argument but the weight of interrupted time. In moments like these, one is reminded that the true measure of a democracy lies not only in the freedoms it proclaims, but also in the lives it leaves waiting for justice. Jai Hind

It’s wonderful to be able to walk or cycle, without fear of traffic. Good for body & mind. Lot of potential in India to develop tourism that’s rooted in Nature & respects the carrying capacity of fragile landscapes. Will create love for Biodiversity that textbooks cannot.

Autonomous systems like this could become far more than a convenience. For people with visual impairments, limited mobility, Parkinson's disease, arthritis, or those using wheelchairs or crutches, hands-free assistive technologies can significantly enhance independence, safety, and dignity. The true measure of innovation is not how futuristic it looks, but how many lives it improves - especially for those who need it most. Science reaches its highest purpose when innovation leaves no one behind.

Dr. R. Balasubramaniam, Member, NITI Aayog, reflects on the importance of placing communities at the centre of the development process through meaningful listening and participation. Drawing on decades of experience, he underscores that lasting development outcomes emerge when policies and programmes are shaped by the lived experiences, knowledge, and aspirations of communities. He highlights that listening is not merely a consultative exercise but the foundation of dignified, citizen-centric governance, enabling better policy design, stronger accountability, and more sustainable development outcomes. As India advances towards the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047, fostering participatory governance and strengthening community engagement will remain central to building an inclusive and empowered nation. #CitizenCentricGovernance #ViksitBharat @PMOIndia @narendramodi @Rao_InderjitS @MIB_India @PIB_India @DDNewslive @ashoklahiribjp @drrbalu

This is the kind of playful innovation we need to be able to solve big problems, but the bigger question is, who is it being designed for? The solutions for people with disabilities still remains sparse. I see this innovation benefiting many, but will it reach them?
Innovation often begins with a simple question: "What if everyday objects could think for us?" An engineer has built a fully autonomous, hands-free umbrella that intelligently follows its user using smart cameras - turning an everyday necessity into a glimpse of the future. Small ideas. Smart engineering. Big impact. #Robotics #AI #FutureTech

"High-pitched sound of drones, which mimics that of bees and wasps, causes annoyance and disrupts these insects' regular movements." 🛸🦋🪰🐝🐞 It would be interesting to know if the #DroneDidi scheme should also be mindful of shooing away crucial pollinators from fields.
While drones and Conservation Surveillance Technologies have revolutionised how we monitor wildlife and mitigate human-animal conflict, experts are urging a pause and considering the hidden costs. Read the news report featuring Priyadarsanan Dharma Rajan, Adjunct Fellow at ATREE, and other experts discussing how high-pitched drone frequencies cause severe stress to birds, insects and breeding wildlife when flown too low or fast. thehindu.com/news/national/k…
