Good morning 🇿🇦🇬🇧, The @UCT_news Alumni for Palestine is calling for the suspension and removal of David Ansara and Advocate Mark Oppenheimer from the UCT Council over how they have exercised their freedom of expression. For those of us who have spent a decade watching South African politics and economics for a living, the call is no surprise. But I must say, as UCT alumni myself, I’m disappointed. I’ve also been watching the tendencies of pro-Palestine movements in South Africa for a while. Last month, I wrote about the dangerous intolerance of these groups and how they often harass South Africans. The alumni group gives two reasons why Ansara should be suspended and Oppenheimer removed. Both are political, and both are ridiculous reasons. Reading the documents, a sensible and unbiased person can only conclude that the group wants Council members it disagrees with politically to be purged. • My latest column. Link in the replies. ⬇️
