The @UCT_news Alumni for Palestine is calling for the suspension and removal of David Ansara and Advocate Mark Oppenheimer from the UCT Council over how they have exercised their freedom of expression. For those of us who have spent a decade watching South African politics and economics for a living, the call is no surprise. But I must say, as UCT alumni myself, I’m disappointed.
I’ve also been watching the tendencies of pro-Palestine movements in South Africa for a while. Last month, I wrote about the dangerous intolerance of these groups and how they often harass South Africans.
The alumni group gives two reasons why Ansara should be suspended and Oppenheimer removed. Both are political, and both are ridiculous reasons. Reading the documents, a sensible and unbiased person can only conclude that the group wants Council members it disagrees with politically to be purged.

I cried tears of joy as I woke up and saw the protests in France.
These young kids are embodying the Western tradition of protest, demanding their fair share of the economic pie.
The solution is simple: tax the rich. But Macron (who is a former banker) won’t do it. Now he faces these young brave people! Beautiful.
Whatever is destroyed, these young industrious Frenchmen will be able to rebuild.
Vive la France, vive la République!

As local journalists report escalating violence across Paris and the rest of France, we urge all parties to exercise restraint and engage in meaningful dialogue aimed at securing an immediate ceasefire. The events of October 17 did not happen in a vacuum!
Should France fail to guarantee the safety of the brave freedom fighters taking over its streets, we might consider imposing targeted sanctions on wine and cheese from areas of Paris where they face repression.

We call on France to exercise restraint when dispersing the freedom fighters on the streets of Paris. These brave warriors for justice must receive immediate humanitarian aid, and their safety must be guaranteed in accordance with international law. Failure to comply will leave us no choice but to bring a case before the ICJ, in close cooperation with that renowned champion of human rights, Afghanistan.

In 1683, a brave European force, led by the Poles, decisively repelled the Ottoman assault on Vienna.
