How incredibly stupid is @AlboMP ‘s new CGT for all the millions of Australians who own shares or crypto etc outside super. Who will pay for this loss of productivity? @AlboMP ? This failed new CGT will destroy productivity for all Australians investors. Read the @facebook post👇 Another unexpected impact! #StoptheCGT #JoinWARonCGT
“Want to understand just how bloody ridiculous Australia's new CGT system becomes from 1 July 2027? Not just for shares either... crypto too. It's faaaaarked!!!!!!! 🤡
Say an ordinary Aussie builds up 8,240 BHP shares across 12 purchases plus 6 dividend reinvestment parcels, all bought at different prices, dates and brokerage costs. If those shares are held across 30 June 2027, the law can effectively reset their cost base around 1 July 2027 using market value, with the pre 2027 notional gain deferred until you eventually sell and potentially still eligible for the old 50% discount, while eligible post 2027 gains move into the new CPI indexation system.
Now sell only 4,350 shares in 2032 and start the completely f*kd accounting process! First identify which acquisition parcels were actually disposed of, calculate their allocated sale proceeds and brokerage, calculate the deferred pre 2027 gain attributable to those parcels, THEN calculate the post 2027 indexed cost base separately for each relevant parcel where indexation applies...
Indexed cost = eligible cost-base amount × CPI for the quarter you sell ÷ CPI for the quarter that particular cost was incurred. Except the third cost base element isn't indexed, different dividend reinvestment purchases and later eligible costs can have completely different CPI starting points and indexation itself generally requires the 12 month holding rule to be satisfied.
THEN calculate each post 2027 capital gain, aggregate the parcels, apply current year capital losses in the legislated order, starting with deferred non-residential gains before moving through the other categories, repeat the sequencing AGAIN for carried forward losses, apply whatever remaining concessions actually qualify, add everything back together and THEN, if the minimum tax provisions apply to you, calculate your minimum tax capital gain after those CGT steps, multiply it by 30%, calculate your normal income tax WITH that gain, calculate your normal income tax AGAIN without that minimum tax capital gain, subtract one liability from the other, compare the result against the 30% calculation and potentially pay the difference.
Congratulations... what used to be "sell shares, subtract cost base, apply losses and potentially halve an eligible long term gain" can now become 18 acquisition parcels + 18 different cost histories + a 30 June 2027 market valuation + deferred historical gains + post 2027 indexed cost bases + multiple CPI ratios + brokerage allocations + statutory loss sequencing + ordinary income-tax modelling + another 30% minimum-tax calculation. Seriously... WTF!!!!
These aren't derivatives, offshore structures or some billionaire tax scheme... THEY'RE JUST SHARES!!! If an Aussie needs advanced accounting software and historical CPI tables just to work out the Government's cut of an investment bought with money they've already paid TAX on, maybe the problem isn't that CGT needs another "reform"... maybe CGT itself needs to GO!!!
ZERO CGT FOR AUSTRALIAN CITIZENS. Reward people for investing, taking risks and building wealth instead of turning success into a f*kd mathematics exam so complex you're paying an accountant thousands just to figure out what the bloody Government says you owe!!!”

$2.5b to prop up an Aluminium smelter that can’t run profitably with electricity prices where they are
$40b into snowy hydro (a battery)
$8b into home battery subsidies
$2b into roof top solar subsidies
Plus they underwrite the losses (if any) of the Eraring coal fired power plant (up to $225m pa)
That’s a hell of a lot of money to add zero meaningful electricity GENERATION. They’ve botched the system for $60b + .. how many new baseload nuclear or coal plants could that have built?

BREAKING: Trump Invokes Defense Production Act to Restrict Critical Mineral Exports $MP $USAR $UUUU $AREC $ALOY $TMC
Today, President Donald J. Trump signed a Presidential Determination delegating authority under the Defense Production Act to institute export restrictions on recoverable critical minerals and materials (CMMs).
The Determination finds that CMMs are critical industrial resources necessary to promoting the national defense, particularly with regard to military production, industrial applications, and national security.
The Determination finds that the United States relies heavily on imports of certain CMMs from foreign sources, threatening serious and sustained supply chain disruptions.
The Determination grants the Secretary of Commerce the authority to institute export restrictions on CMMs.
The United States holds substantial CMMs in finished goods like permanent magnets and lithium-ion batteries, yet simultaneously relies heavily on imports of certain CMMs from foreign sources, some of which are at risk of serious, sustained, and long-term supply chain disruptions.
Found in industrial waste materials, once finished items containing CMMs reach end-of-life, the CMMs within them can be reclaimed and recycled.
CMMs are crucial to maintaining and strengthening the function, security, and resilience of critical infrastructure sectors.
CMMs are pervasive in defense supply chains and are key inputs in advanced defense systems that support technological superiority, operational readiness, and an array of high-performance military equipment.

First they lied.
Then they pillaged your hard earned business, property & investment gains and taxed all forms of aspiration in Australia into the dirt.
Then they lied some more.
Then they did a deal with the Greens to see it through.
Then they told you to 'get over it'.

🚨 FORMER RBA GOVERNOR PHILIP LOWE HAS DELIVERED A DAMNING WARNING ABOUT LABOR’S TAX CHANGES.
Lowe says extending the capital gains tax reforms beyond housing could be to Australia’s detriment and weaken the investment needed to grow the economy.
His message cuts through the political spin: Australia is spending too much time arguing about how to divide the economic pie and not enough time making it bigger.
Higher taxes and more complex rules may sound like “fairness” in Canberra, but if they discourage investment, productivity and business confidence, ordinary Australians ultimately pay through fewer jobs, weaker wages and higher costs.
A strong economy cannot be built through redistribution alone. Australia needs investment, enterprise and genuine growth.
Has Labor created fair reform or another brake on Australia’s economic future?

My own view is that today’s CGT rollback does not go far enough and just adds more arbitrary distortions and complexity to the system. Cleanest solution: just limit CGT inflation indexing to existing properties and leave everything else with a 50% discount.

Albozo did the lying and now his ministers are copping an arse whooping daily on Australian national television.
So sweet to watch.

The government’s argument on CGT seems to be this:
“If we do not tax shares heavily, people will just buy property through companies and avoid the property tax rules.”
But that is not an argument for taxing all shares at up to 47%. It is an argument for drafting better legislation.
We already do this @cjoye @GeoffWilsonWAM .
State based stamp duty legislation has landholder duty rules that look through companies and trusts where the real economic asset is land.
So the concept is not radical. It already exists. The government could have said:
“If an entity is primarily a property holding vehicle, then sales of shares or units in that entity will be treated as property related gains for CGT purposes.”
That would target the actual avoidance risk. Instead, the policy lumps together very different things:
- A founder building a company.
- An employee taking equity risk.
- A serial entrepreneur recycling capital into the next venture.
- An investor backing productive businesses.
- A shareholder in an operating company.
These are not the same economic activity. Capital invested in productive businesses is not the same as capital parked in property.
One funds growth, jobs, innovation, exports, technology, productivity and risk taking. The other is often a leveraged claim on a scarce asset.

Have just signed the petition against the capital gains tax changes.
If you believe, like I do, that this is aspiration killing overreach by the Federal Government then please do likewise.
Don't muck around, because they intend to ram this through Parliament.

Framing higher taxes on non-housing investments as helping young people get into housing is gaslighting.
Anthony Albanese has mounted an emotional defence of Labor’s controversial tax changes, arguing the reforms are needed to give younger Australians a fair shot at home ownership.

The new CGT must be stopped. It’s war on the aspiration and ambition of all Australians. "If you’re disincentivising investment in growth companies, you’re not only hurting investors — you’re hurting Australia’s long-term prosperity."

This is so incredibly good:
Economist Joseph Schumpeter warned that capitalism weakens when prosperous societies become so comfortable they forget where prosperity came from – and begin resenting the entrepreneurial class that created it.
A country might survive high taxes for periods of time. What becomes dangerous is something deeper: the moral suspicion of ambition itself. The creeping belief that commercial success is inherently exploitative, that profit is morally dubious, or that founders should quietly accept punishment for surviving years of uncertainty.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Treasurer Jim Chalmers should think carefully about the signals embedded in this budget. Tax policy communicates values. This budget signals that founders are not viewed as partners in national prosperity, but simply reservoirs of revenue whose success is viewed with suspicion...
Civilisation advances because some people are willing to bet on tomorrow before tomorrow exists. Australia should be doing everything possible to encourage those people to build businesses here. Because once a society begins treating ambition as something suspect rather than admirable, it eventually discovers that no nation can remain prosperous after teaching its most ambitious people that they are unwelcome.

Under the proposed CGT changes, the effective tax rate on a direct share portfolio could rise from 44% to 70% because inflation adjusted losses can’t offset gains unless shares fall in nominal dollar terms.
That means portfolios with a few big winners and lots of average performers (which is how most real world portfolios behave), get hit hardest.
The result is that direct share investing becomes much less attractive than ETFs and pooled investment structures for most Australians, far more so than Treasury’s modelling appears to assume. blog.stockspot.com.au/why-th…

All they have to do is exclude all businesses and share market from the change and it will be so widely supported. But they chose to go hard and keep bluffing without any bloody sense 🤷🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️
I did not realise they were taxing gross rather than net gains… AFR: Investors with diversified share portfolios making a mix of gains and losses compared to inflation could face tax rates of more than 100 per cent on real gains, due to the Albanese government not compensating investors for underperforming stocks.
A former senior Treasury tax official and a hedge fund manager both warned that people with a diversified portfolio of shares could face tax rates 50 per cent higher than Treasury calculated… Chalmers’ office and Treasury were contacted for comment on Thursday about whether real losses would be indexed to inflation.
Under another example, an investor buys shares in Coles and Woolworths, with one outperforming inflation and the other underperforming inflation.
The overall real return is zero after inflation, but the investor would pay tax on the winning stock.
If an investor instead bought an ETF of supermarkets with the same overall result, they would pay no tax.
