Apparently, there is a Latin form of supercalifragilistic....... .
Whether or not Shakespeare really did have “small Latin”, it’s certain that he has the longest word attested in Latin – "honorificabilitudinitatibus" – which stands in turn as the longest word in English that alternates consonants and vowels (27 letters). Here’s the back story:🧵

Boring #AcademicTwitter again, but I'm re-reading a(n otherwise excellent) paper from the 1960s, and couldn't fail to notice how the author refers to his interlocutors: "Professor Clagett," "Dr Moody," "Miss Maier." (For the full truth, we do get a "Mr Crombie" as well.) ...

Agreeing to review 4 books in the span of about a month and half was probably not the wisest professional decision of my life, but it's done, and they were all really good. (3 of them was for a bigger, comparative reivew.) Now, *I can read what I want!!!*

At least, readers at the Warburg don't just acquiesce in whatever bad copyediting they find...

FWIW, this sums up my experience pretty well... but it also seems inevitable, given human nature & the circumstances.
Having spent a brief amount of time on this forum, it is really puzzling to me how some people don't want to be understood by those who disagree with them. Perhaps because I tend to think that no one is inherently stupid or inherently very bad, I find disagreement fascinating /1

Some people's memories are triggered by sounds or scents. Maybe because I moved so much in the last years, for me it is visiting a place where I had lived for a while – it brings back all kinds of memories: visions, scents, sounds. ...

I had not realised how many of them I had collected in Leuven, until I came back. It was a very special place, with special people, and I'm unusually fond of it.

On days like this....
Worrye not about being productyve, for thou art not a product. Thou art a star daunsinge yn a hopeful skye. Thou art a signal blinking across centuryes and worldes. Thou art a song performid onlye once but perfectlye. Thy tyme ys unquantifiable.

The other day I got back a review for a paper in which the reviewer keeps referring to me as 'he'. I mean... why?? (It's almost certainly by a non-native speaker, but then so am I, and all the more reason to pay attention.)

It is with great sadness that I share the news that Zénon Kaluza (b. 1936) passed away this morning, in peace and discreetly. One of the greatest scholars in Medieval Philosophy, remarkably joyful, a loyal friend and a moral person. He will be missed.

Lots of friendship-related readings recently, unintentionally. Currently Buridan: "if we stay only within the bounds of this life, perhaps we might say that no one ought to choose a solitary life for himself, except perhaps in circumstances where he fears death or tyrants." ...

"Hence the Commentator, in Book 5 of the Metaphysics, considers a hermetic man “neither good nor bad.” " It's interesting how Aristotelians tried (and failed?) to make sense of the hermetic life as morally good – or even in Aristotle himself, of the life of the wise person. /f
