PSG only rotate in diagonals. rarely do they move purely laterally or vertically

beyond disgraceful last 15 mins. genuinely pathetic. some of the worst most brainless game management i’ve ever seen in my life

this rotation was the solution. and it’s not just players rotating positions. it’s the timing. the confusion in the midfield bought them space time (even though city were actually zonally decent here), and leads to doubt. dias stays in the last line worried about someone

rotating again with Vitinha, so he stays. Vitinha coming low creates a chain of doubt that yields a free player against the momentum of the press

think the PSG game yesterday puts this to bed

Mention any that isn’t to do with individual player quality?

city had arguably better outlets. Haaland + Semenyo + Doku v Akilouche + Dembele + Doue. one team murdered the other by moving proactively. the other suffered greatly by lumping

+ the way enrique thinks about a lot of the game advantage wise seems to be “marked vs unmarked” (based on his team talk and ht talk clips we’ve seen). it makes sense why is PSG team are so good at dismarking, and why they are also so good at m2m marking extremely early
why is enrique the only manager in the entire world that actually had a positional dynamic approach to facing m2m moments when every other coach just wants to lump it up to their best outlet? the rest of the world is so behind, and i have 0 idea why.

everything is just so proactive. combine that with cognitive freshness + elite athletes who are also incredibly technicians, and you get this team that just steamrolls in the ucl and is so so so hard to “mark” and play against

think a part of the answer is Ligue 1 provides a perfect amount of friction for them to then transfer and platform that game effectively to a higher level in higher level games - it’s just like anytime you or anyone has experienced growth / flow states

PSG get to experience the natural compounding effect of the perfect amount of friction - ligue 1 is still a physical league with great athletes, but the level is not the same as the premier league. cognitively they are so prepared because their well oiled machine works perfectly

in Ligue 1. they get to take that baseline, test it, iterate, and then apply to the big stage. i think this perfect level friction is a big part of how much they grow so effectively in champions league games

watch any game against a bielsa team, and the ones that kill them were the ones that moved, confused, and isolated their best players in optimal spaces and duels, not just praying to win 1v1s. 0 idea why more teams don’t move earlier against m2m locks

I actually think City did a decent job for their first goal, but just look at how confused the last line becomes with all of the rotations. absolute headache

PSG are just so disgustingly proactive with how they move and rotate - you never have time to lock in m2m because their players have already rotated all over the pitch before you can jump to your reference point. besides the cognitive and physical fitness they have bc of league 1
