Hi everyone! 👋 It’s that time of the year again! Our physical event is happening tomorrow, and we’re still looking forward to having you join us. Maybe you somehow missed our incessant posts from the @LagosTUG, or perhaps you haven’t seen any of the submissions for the African Frontier Challenge. Either way, we’re still here for you. Here’s another opportunity to join us—either virtually or in person at Café One, UNILAG. The spots are filling up quickly, so reserve your space now! 🎟 RSVP: usergroups.tableau.com/event…

Hi guys! 👋 Happy to join the African Frontier competition by the @LagosTUG, and as a co-lead, there's no better way than to lead by example and invite others in as we close in on the end of the challenge. My entry: African Heads of State. Fifty-four nations, from the founding fathers of independence to the leaders in power today, told through 108 portraits arranged as a constellation in the shape of Africa. Select any leader and a dossier opens: how they came to power, how long they held it, and how it ended. A few things about the process I want to share: I found a "Share Your Stories" community design of portrait bubbles scattered across a world map, and I knew I wanted that feeling for African leadership history. Then I brought AI into the workflow, and this is where it got interesting. I worked with Claude as a genuine build partner: it sourced and circle-cropped all 108 portraits, generated the background artwork in the exact typography I wanted, wrote the calculated fields, prepared the dataset with layout coordinates baked in, and debugged with me live. Tableau-wise, this build runs on custom shape palettes, a poster background technique, parameter actions for era flipping and leader selection, hover set actions, and a dual axis selection glow. Feel free to ask me about any of it. The challenge is still open, and I would like to see more African stories told with data, whether you are a beginner or an expert. If you've been hesitating, this is your sign. Instead of just celebrating, we're throwing down a challenge and doing it together with the Accra Tableau User Group (Accra TUG) and Kenya Tableau User Group (Kenya TUG). Take one African dataset, our heads of state data, and tell a story only Africa can tell. Then show us how you used AI to get there. That is exactly where our craft is heading: the tools are evolving, and so are we. If you work with data anywhere across Africa or beyond, this is for you. Submissions close 4th of August, and entries get reviewed live by @zizzy_data at our anniversary event on the 8th of August. Come build something with us: notion.so/African-Frontier-V…
