"Where does the name 'Ziggu' come from?"

After the excavation and restoration efforts, the Ziggurat of Ur, originally constructed around 4000 years ago by King Ur-Nammu of the Neo-Sumerian Empire, stands as one of Iraq's oldest surviving temples. Located approximately one hour's drive from Nasiriyah's city center, this ancient structure serves as a tangible testament to the diverse religious practices prevalent during its time of creation in 2050 BC.
The ziggurat's remains were initially unearthed in 1850, and subsequent thorough excavations were conducted in the 1930s and 1920s, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of the site. Regrettably, during the 1991 Gulf War, the ziggurat suffered damage from small arms fire and vibrations caused by nearby explosions.
Presently, ongoing archaeological efforts continue to uncover artifacts and new discoveries within the vicinity of the Ziggurat of Ur.
