Zero tariffs, greater opportunities! 🇨🇳🇿🇦 Today, my Embassy co-hosted a zero-tariff policy briefing with DTIC and SARS. I'm deeply impressed by the surge of South African export to China from May to September. Today's event witnessed South African exporters' great enthusiasm and fruitiful exchanges. We encourage them to make full use of the zero-tariff treatment and turn its benefits into tangible trade and investment opportunities.#ChinaZeroTariff
THE DAILY PRACTICE
THE QUESTION
Would you still be this committed if nobody knew you were doing it?
THE PARADOX
We like to believe we are driven by purpose, but often we are driven by recognition. If your motivation disappears when the audience does, perhaps you were never serving the work. Perhaps you were serving your image.
THE MIRROR
Where have you confused being admired with being useful?
THE SHIFT
Perhaps integrity is doing what matters without needing anyone to witness it.
THE PRACTICE
Do one important thing today that nobody will praise you for. Do it properly. Do not post it. Do not mention it. Do not look for credit.
Then ask:
If nobody sees the good I do, do I still want to be good?

WORD OF THE DAY: PROTECTION
Protection is not simply about keeping danger away. It is about preserving dignity, defending rights and safeguarding the hopes and dreams of others. We protect our homes, our possessions and our livelihoods. Yet we sometimes neglect the things that matter most: relationships, reputations, peace of mind and the vulnerable among us.
True protection is never an excuse for control. Love that imprisons is not protection. Leadership that intimidates is not protection. Authority that humiliates those it is meant to serve has lost its purpose. Those entrusted with protecting others must remember that their greatest responsibility is to serve, not to dominate.
The purpose of protection is not to make people dependent on our power, but to give them the freedom to live without fear. Protect with compassion, lead with integrity, and serve with humility.
The greatest protection is that which allows others to flourish.
Join the movement.

Today, I visited the site of the water contamination affecting Findlay Reservoir, which supplies parts of the Pretoria CBD.
A damaged sewer pipe in Groenkloof allowed sewage to seep into the underground water system feeding the Fountains springs, resulting in contamination of the water supply.
Our teams are working to repair the damaged infrastructure and address the source of the contamination.
Importantly, we have already isolated the affected water source and diverted supply to Salvokop Reservoir, allowing us to supply water from a clean source while repairs continue.
However, some contaminated water may still remain in the distribution network. Until the system has been fully flushed and testing confirms that the water is safe, residents must continue boiling tap water before use.
Our priority is to complete the flushing and restore safe drinking water to affected communities as quickly as possible.

The incident resulted in microbiological non- compliance affecting water supplied from Findlay Reservoir. The City acted quickly and emptied the Findlay Reservoir and switched the Pretoria CBD and surrounding areas to an alternative supply from the Salvokop Reservoir.

SUSPECT ELECTROCUTED DURING CABLE THEFT IN BOOYSENS
A man was found dead inside a medium-voltage electrical chamber in Booysens Reserve on Thursday morning, 22 October, following an alleged attempted cable theft.
City Power personnel discovered the chamber’s access door forced open, with a cable-cutting tool in the deceased’s possession and signs of tampering with electrical equipment.
Electricity supply to nine load centres was temporarily interrupted while SAPS investigated.
Power has since been restored to all affected customers.
City Power has warned that tampering with electrical infrastructure can cause fatal injuries and widespread outages, urging residents to report suspicious activity.

South African municipalities are charging homeowners with private boreholes monthly fees for accessing groundwater, targeting residents who have invested in alternative water supplies because of unreliable municipal services.
In Mbombela, Mpumalanga, residential borehole owners pay R406.50 per borehole. Businesses are charged R877.12 per borehole despite ongoing water shortages across its jurisdiction, which includes Mbombela, Hazyview, and White River.
In Mangaung, the municipality has maintained a monthly borehole service fee of R70 for properties without municipal water meters.
The charge is described as an infrastructure availability fee and applies even where the borehole is not connected to the property’s plumbing.
In Vryheid, under the Abaqulusi Local Municipality, a R133 monthly borehole tariff has also generated controversy.
The Department of Water and Sanitation has clarified that households using borehole water for reasonable, non-commercial domestic purposes do not need to register their groundwater use under national water regulations.
The exemption also covers small, non-commercial home gardens, with no prescribed volume threshold for qualifying domestic use. However, the national exemption does not automatically prevent municipalities from imposing local infrastructure or service charges under their own tariffs and bylaws.

I spent the morning in Cullinan, Region 5, at the City of Tshwane’s hydrant filling stations for water tankers. This is the area that tankers are designated to collect water and transport it communities that have been impacted by the Bronkhorstspruit Water Treatment Plant water issue.
These hydrant filling stations aren’t supplied through the Bronkhorstspruit Water Treatment Plant. My oversight visit today is focused on tracking the value chain of compliance with the delivery of water to communities. @CityTshwane

UPDATE: KOEBERG UNIT 1 RETURNS TO SERVICE
Eskom is pleased to announce that Unit 1 at Koeberg Nuclear Power Station was successfully synchronised to the national electricity grid at 12:02 on 20 October 2026, following completion of the required recovery activities.
The unit is stable and electricity output is being progressively increased in accordance with normal operating procedures.
On 16 October 2026, during testing activities associated with the planned maintenance outage of Koeberg Unit 2, an electrical disturbance exceeded the predefined tolerance limits of a protection system associated with Unit 1, resulting in the automatic opening of the unit's 400 kV and 24 kV breakers. The subsequent investigation concluded that a conservative protection relay setting contributed to the response, with the protection system operating as designed to safely shut down the unit and ensure the continued safe operation of the plant.
There was no impact on nuclear safety.
The successful return of Unit 1 reflects the coordinated efforts and commitment of the Koeberg teams responsible for the recovery and restoration activities.
Unit 2 at Koeberg Nuclear Power Station remains in planned maintenance.

The project nearly doubles the mine’s zinc production capacity to around 500,000 tonnes a year and is expected to create between 800 and 1,000 permanent jobs, following the employment of more than 1,500 workers during construction.
Vedanta has invested a total of R89bn in South Africa since 2011 and plans to develop local zinc smelting capacity as part of a broader industrial hub.
