JUST IN: 🇨🇦 Canada loses 68,000 jobs in September as trade war with the US continues.
This is the second consecutive month of job losses, with Canada losing a total of 110,000 jobs over the past two months.
Canada's unemployment rate also jumped to 6.5%.
The ongoing trade war with the US is adding more pressure on the Canadian economy as the job market continues to weaken.

$WEN Wendy’s is suddenly a takeover + short-squeeze story. Shares jumped after the Financial Times reported that activist investor Nelson Peltz’s Trian Fund Management is preparing a consortium to potentially take Wendy’s private, possibly with BlueFive Capital and major franchisee Flynn Group. A formal offer could come within weeks, although there is no confirmed deal yet.
Peltz already has serious leverage: Trian and Peltz collectively control more than 24% of Wendy’s, making them the company’s largest shareholder. Peltz has been involved with Wendy’s before and previously considered a takeover in 2022. In February, Trian described the stock as “undervalued” and disclosed discussions with financing sources and potential co-investors.
The timing is interesting because Wendy’s is struggling. The company recently withdrew its full-year guidance and cut its dividend after weak customer traffic and franchisee profitability. Q2 U.S. same-store sales fell 7%, while traffic dropped 12.5%. Management is now working on a turnaround focused on menu quality, value, marketing, operations, digital initiatives and the restaurant footprint.
But that’s exactly what could make a take-private attractive: Wendy’s market cap is only around $1.6B–$1.7B, giving a well-funded consortium a realistic path to acquire the company and potentially restructure it away from public-market pressure.
The biggest wild card is the short interest. Around 43.3% of the float is currently sold short, with roughly 57.5M shares short. If Trian actually submits a meaningful offer at a premium, shorts could rush to cover, potentially creating a major squeeze on top of the takeover speculation.
Wendy’s said it would “thoroughly review any proposal submitted by Trian” and that the board regularly evaluates strategic opportunities to maximize shareholder value. Trian has not confirmed that a bid is coming.
Wall Street remains cautious on the underlying business. Recent targets range from $5.50 to $8, with several firms at Hold and Morgan Stanley at Sell/$5.50. That means the current upside case is increasingly about M&A optionality rather than fundamentals.
Bottom line: $WEN is now a high-risk, high-reward event-driven trade. The business itself still has significant problems, but 24%+ insider/activist ownership + ~43% short interest + a possible take-private bid creates an unusually explosive setup. The key catalyst is simple: Does Peltz actually submit a formal offer? If yes, the stock could move very quickly as the market prices in a takeover premium and shorts scramble to exit.

For my first post, I’m sharing a letter @NVIDIA signed on why open models matter.
AI will transform every industry, power every company, and be built by every country.
Open models strengthen safety and cybersecurity, accelerate innovation and diffusion, and enable sovereignty.
The world needs both frontier closed models and frontier open models.
