Gramsci

Fields Medalist Timothy Gowers raises a troubling possibility: AI could become so powerful at mathematics that future generations may lose the motivation to study the subject deeply enough to understand its discoveries. The paradox is striking. Machines might eventually solve problems far beyond human capabilities, while fewer mathematicians possess the expertise needed to interpret their results. For Gowers, the deeper concern extends beyond the future of mathematical careers. It is about preserving the curiosity, intellectual discipline, and satisfaction of discovery that have sustained mathematics for centuries. He also envisions a possible transformation of the mathematician’s role, from discovering new theorems to interpreting, connecting, and explaining mathematical knowledge generated by AI. Reflecting on the approaching social consequences, Gowers offers a vivid analogy: “We’re still on the beach, we can see the tsunami, but it hasn’t quite reached us yet.” Importantly, he is not calling for mathematics departments to close or for universities to stop admitting PhD students. His remarks are cautious predictions about a possible future, rather than descriptions of changes that have already taken place.

The A.I.-induced crisis in math is depressing because devalues one the most rarified areas of human thought. The great @terrence_tao suggests that mathematicians may find creative new ways to use A.I. that advances their field. "They will increasingly work in large groups collaborating on once-unimagined projects." I hope he's right, but the obvious question is: will A.I. companies simply then train their algorithms to do the same thing? nytimes.com/2026/10/16/us/ma…

Ten research-level math problems, with their solutions hidden from AI. ProofCouncil solved 9/10. GPT-6 Astra alone solved 7/10. An open-weight entrant solved none. Thirty mathematicians checked the proofs.

In January, Jonathan Gorard (@getjonwithit) was confident AI couldn’t produce a machine-checked Lean proof of Maryna Viazovska’s Fields Medal sphere-packing result before late 2027. By March, one existed. He says the real story turned out to be complicated. Full episode: youtu.be/oQypVVv1u1o

Barbara Tuchman’s A DISTANT MIRROR meets these criteria—and then some.
I’m looking for an extraordinary book that is so compelling it leaves me wondering why I hadn't read it sooner. Any genre works; what would you recommend?

A Fields Medalist gave AI the text of his mathematics lecture. He didn't ask it to solve a problem. But the AI agent unexpectedly suggested a better mathematical definition. Maxim Kontsevich, winner of the 1998 Fields Medal, says the experience astonished him. In a new interview, he describes how AI is beginning to contribute not just calculations and proofs, but ideas about how mathematics itself should be formulated. lo onestamente non sono stupita.

Vergogna.

Researchers tested if AI can do PhD-level physics research. They released a new benchmark called TheoPhysEval. They wanted to see if frontier AI models could handle real, novel science. So they gathered 50 completely unpublished, research-level theoretical physics problems. The exact kind of grueling calculations given to first-year PhD students as starter projects. They handed them to the latest AI agents. The AI didn't just solve them. It went completely off script. The top model solved 49 out of the 50 problems. But here is where it gets crazy. On several of the problems, the AI gave an answer that contradicted the human answer key. The researchers initially marked the AI wrong. The AI pushed back. It insisted its calculations were correct and the human experts had made a mistake. The researchers double-checked the math. The AI was right. The experts were wrong. It didn't just pass the test. It found subtle mathematical errors in the scientists' own original, peer-level solutions. And it did all of this completely autonomously. For less than $3 a problem. For decades, we’ve used these kinds of complex, months-long theoretical calculations to train the next generation of human scientists. Now, an AI does it in the background for the price of a cup of coffee. The scientific community is already debating the implications. If an agent can accurately perform concrete calculations across theoretical physics research for pennies, these problems are no longer suitable for PhD students.
