John Singer Sargent, undoubtedly one of the most significant formal portraitists of the fin-de-siècle glitterati, both in America and abroad, was born on this day in 1856. The expressive brushwork and creative lighting in 'Nonchaloir (Repose)' from 1911 creates a painting that transcends the category of mere portraiture.

The North Shore Line's electroliner was basically a glorified trolley and it still made the trip between Chicago and Milwaukee in the same amount of time as modern Amtrak service. Nearly 100 years ago. Under fully electric power.
