Canada’s 4 existing submarines are all over 30 years old and in need of replacement.
While some comments from the (former) PM implied nuclear powered (SSN) submarines were a replacement option, it’s been confirmed only non-nuclear (SSK) boats are being considered. Why is this?🧵

A lot of takes on this trade war saying Canada can’t win focus too much on the numbers and not enough on psychology and politics. One only loses when one gives up or is destroyed. We know that weaker opponents beat the US by outlasting them. The US is divided, Canada is united.
This is it clearly stated. The foundation upon which we have built our national strategy and policies is now as sturdy as sand. We cannot be operating like it is business as usual. None of the old assumptions can held as valid.

The entire post-Second World War Western security order, which we took so completely for granted that our country gave up the ability to defend itself and its allies with more than token efforts, is unravelling in real time.
Today’s announcement: five-year design phase for HSR.
We merely have a reprieve, but the threats remain. We cannot return to complacency in this grave hour. “Let’s move as if our national survival depends on it. Let’s show the world, and ourselves, that Canada can respond to danger.”

"Since we only seem capable of even aspiring to seriousness when we're scared shitless, we need to stay scared shitless. It seems to be the only thing that motivates us."

I spoke to @thebrandonsun ahead of our joint @assiniboine_mb and @BrandonUni panel discussing the implications of US election. We talked briefly about what Trump might mean for Canada and Ukraine, but also about how a Harris administration would have expectations for Canada.
Brandon’s post-secondary institutions are teaming up to help interpret the potential consequences of the Nov. 5 American presidential election. buff.ly/3Nwrlbp #bdnmb
Looking forward to serving as a panelist alongside fellow @assiniboine_mb colleague @journalist_guy plus @BrandonUni political science profs. I will discuss the implications of this election on global security and especially for NATO and Ukraine.
Coming up on Tuesday, Oct. 22, experts from BU and Assiniboine College will share insights on the U.S. election and why it's important to you. news.brandonu.ca/2024/10/17/…

What an incredible way to head into the holidays. Today, Assiniboine’s School of Business took a major leap introducing the Peters School of Business, a decision made in honour of well-known community and business leaders, Gord & Diane Peters. More: bit.ly/3teH1JL
I had incredible time helping to facilitate this matrix game alongside colleagues from @AgAssiniboine! #wargaming isn’t just for “wars” but for when serious gaming can enhance learning and research—of course, serious doesn’t mean it wasn’t fun!
Active learning comes to life! Second year students in our Russ Edwards School of Agriculture & Environment (@AgAssiniboine) spent the morning running a matrix game exploring the local dynamics of project approvals with social, environmental, and economic factors.
I had an incredible time in the MA program at @UManitobaPOLS. Learn and research alongside many great scholars such as @AndreaCharron and @BryanPeeler to name but a few.
