Malaysia wants to become a regional hub for AI & data centres. A data centre can use up to 25.5 million tonnes of water annually. This amount can support 300,000 people every single day.
Nothing can replace our freshwater ecosystems once they are destroyed & drained.

MVR 570 million. That’s what we spent on Bayraktar combat drones in 2024.
A professional deep-sea rescue ROV rated to over 600 meters, with sonar and a recovery arm, costs around $100,000. Some less.
Five people are dead in a 60-meter cave in Vaavu Atoll. We flew in Italian experts just to locate the bodies.
With that same budget we could have equipped every atoll in this country with underwater rescue capability and still had money left over.
So when does a country stop buying weapons to feel powerful and start buying tools to actually protect people?
The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) confirmed that the body of one of the five missing divers was discovered inside the cave at a depth of approximately 60 meters. It is believed that the bodies of the remaining four divers are also within the cave.
Speaking on a Public Service Media (PSM) program, Brigadier General Saleem explained that military divers are presently qualified for depths up to 50 meters. However, he noted that training to extend this capability to 100 meters is scheduled to begin this year.
The MNDF previously reported that the cave where the five Italian divers descended is situated 60 meters below sea level and extends approximately 200 feet in length.
“The remaining four divers are presumed to be inside this cave, which is about 200 feet long. As this is an extremely dangerous, high-risk operation, additional Coast Guard divers and specialized equipment have been deployed to the area,” the MNDF stated.

Why the fuck does a sex scandal get more traction in this country than a mismanaged case of suicide, the torture of prisoners, the death of a prisoner due to negligence, and the many other horrendous horrendous atrocities taken up by this government.

you hate binveriyaa scheme because it's a kuree sarukaaru project. i hate binveriyaa scheme because any sort of land ownership in 2026 just leads to further growth of the inequality gap in this country. we're not the same.

The true cost of Rasmale is the opportunity cost of developing the other cities in Maldives. This will cause further centralization and misery, and erosion of Dhivehi identity.
Imagine if the government were willing to spend 10 billion (cost of reclamation without establishment of infrastructure and services) on developing the cities? For reference, only 2.1 billion was allocated to ALL 200 councils in 2025.
Ras Malé is at 50 percent reclamation.
The project was launched on December 18, 2023. Two years and four months ago. The presidential pledge at launch was completion in eight months.
Do the math. Eight months promised. Twenty-eight months elapsed. Fifty percent complete.
The closest domestic precedent makes the delay harder to explain, not easier. Hulhumalé Phase 2 reclaimed 244 hectares in 77 days in 2015. At that pace, the 1,153 hectares of Ras Malé would have been reclaimed in roughly 12 months. The eight-month promise was plausible. The execution is what failed.
Ras Malé was pitched as the administration’s signature domestic project. Three times the combined area of Hulhumalé phases one and two. Land for 15,000 housing plot allocations. A zero-carbon safe island with a two-metre elevation at the edge, three metres at the centre. Renewable power. Electric transit. A bridge to an airstrip in the adjacent lagoon.
None of that exists yet. What exists is a half-reclaimed lagoon, one halt, one resumption, additional dredgers added to accelerate a timeline that still has not been accelerated, and no public revision of the completion date. Reclamation is the first phase. Elevation, roads, water, power, drainage, seawalls, housing construction, all still ahead.
The political cost of unkept timelines is not borne by the President. It is borne by the 15,000 families who were told their housing plot allocation was coming on the Ras Malé timeline. It is borne by the Greater Malé residents still living in overcrowded conditions while the flagship project to address overcrowding slips by years. It is borne by the taxpayers who financed the initial contracts, the resumption, the additional dredgers, and who will finance the remaining reclamation.
In 2023, the President made a promise. In 2026, the project is halfway there. Neither the President nor anyone in his office has revised the promise in public.
A half-reclaimed lagoon is not an eco-city. It is a lagoon with some fill in it, a failed timeline, and a queue of families waiting for a home.
