“Everything negative – pressure, challenges – is all an opportunity for me to rise.” - Kobe Bryant
Great reminder that things won’t always go our way. It’s all about the way we respond and how we move forward. – at West Region, Singapore
This whole Star Trek x MTG debate is just expected and also fascinating.
Do we play MTG for the game? Or do we play MTG for matching IPs?
What I’ve seen so far is that there’s a bit of something for everyone.
But if you’re stubborn and just wanna hate. You’re entitled to skip.
So here’s what I think of the 1 rare per pack issue in FAB 3.0. Bear with me, it’s a long one.
Getting 2 rares or even 3 won’t make it better if they weren’t gonna have value anyway. So the number of rares in a pack was never really the problem.
Getting more majestics per box will also just plummet the already low EV of some boxes. Still doesn’t make it more exciting to open.
I think we can all agree that FAB needs to make decks cheaper to form. That is essential in order for the game to grow faster. Hitting $300-700 decks rather than $1000+ per deck is ideal.
So we need to make decks cheaper while making singles more expensive so that ripping packs is fun. Wtf?!? How can more expensive singles make decks cheaper? Stfu Zack!!
Well there’ll need to be a fundamental shift around how decks are designed to be built.
The reason why they’re so expensive right now is that most decks are mostly Majestics.
Majestics are too good. They form the core of every deck’s gameplay and have no constraints so they become auto-includes.
Most decks just need to be BestMajesticsForClassAndTalent.dek
A fun way to solve this would be to form each hero’s core gameplay around rares. With different sets of strong rares becoming sort of a Talent system around a class.
Back in WoW, we had classes with talent systems, and each talent system had a set of base skills that you used as a base rotation, and very powerful skills you specced into that had longer cooldowns.
They are important and must be used during an encounter but you don’t get to use it that often. And it can only be used as part of this spec.
What if FAB rares could be the core base skills of a certain play style of a class. And only 1-2 majestics work well with that play style.
Make generics weaker. Make class majestics very powerful but only when specifically used together with certain groups of rares. The base power level of most decks should be based around those rares.
So decks start to shift towards 80-90% rares, 10-20% majestics+
Yes, SAGE could get a little more expensive but probably not much more? Maybe $30-100 per deck? Which I think is still very acceptable.
And they would play so much closer to CC as well, becoming a true ramp from SAGE to CC.
And CC with such rarity composition would cost maybe somewhere around the target of $300-700 including M and L equipments.
Get a SAGE precon $20.
Upgrade with rares, spend $80 upgrade to optimal SAGE deck.
From there, another $200+ gets you to a CC level deck.
The move away from Fables is a signal no?
Most playables are meant to be affordable moving forward, which means most of a deck would be meant to be constructed around rares.
There would still be collectability in the form of alt arts and marvels.
Yes. Packs will then be exciting to open.
And no, we can’t have 2 of those rares per pack otherwise it would crash the value to boxes on release.
Very excited to see how FAB 3.0 would pan out and how close it is to what I imagine!
Thanks for listening if you actually read through it all!
Would assume that rares would be made more powerful and form more meaningful parts of decks.
And they would also retain more value because well, they’d actually be rare.
Still doesn’t answer how new players get into the game more easily though.
One thing that makes @playriftbound pre-rift so good is seeing friends pulling others who are new to the game to try it out.
Sure they were likely gonna go 0-3 but there were players guiding new players on how to play the game and everyone’s all smiles.
Loving it. 😊
Big thanks to SlabAcad and @CCGSmith teams for making this happen.
Thank you @playriftbound @riftboundop for blessing us on the event.
It’s really nice just seeing people have fun, smiling, and playing with new cards. Really honored to have the chance to host those of you who joined us this weekend.
Huge thanks to Ignite Gaming and One Punggol for the venue, and to the vendors and artists who joined us.
Super grateful. And hearts are full. 🫶
