Losing a saint's relics to the enemy as you escape their advance is a very 10th century problem
Turns out the Russians may have just lost the bones of their "St. Dmitry of the Don" while running away from the Ukrainian army. The bones were sent to the front last week to apparently "boost morale and inspire the average Russian soldier."

Whenever I post a graph that indicates that those with college degrees are MORE likely to be weekly religious attenders than those with less education, I get the same pushback: "Well, maybe people with less education have to work more hours or on the weekend, and just can't get to church" That doesn't explain the difference. Among those who are working part-time, someone with a grad degree is 7 pts more likely to be a weekly attender. Among those not working at all, 39% of those w/a grad degree are weekly attenders compared to 29% of those with a high school diploma or less. And that's AFTER I control for age and income of the respondent.

Haven’t seen anyone talk about this, but the @nytimes made an interactive map called The American Mosaic, showing ancestry groups that make up every U.S. census tract. There are many interesting communities to explore. You can zoom in and see what makes up your own neighborhood: nytimes.com/interactive/2026…

Essay today by my grad school friend, Neil Gross. A good sociologist, he see claims about the politicization of higher ed as not as simple as they seem; common defenses fall short as well. TL:DR affective polarization among students is the driver. nytimes.com/2026/08/07/opini…

Sociologists: I am teaching our capstone course this fall, which focuses on sociological scholarship published in 2025 or 2026. What recent pubs (books or articles) have you read that were particularly good, and also engaging for undergrads? All suggestions welcome--thank you!
