When did you last have your eyes tested? National Eye Health Week, taking place from 21 to 27 September, encourages us all to look after our eyes, attend regular sight tests and remind our friends, family and colleagues to do the same. At @yourdolphin, we support our employees’ eye health by providing annual eyesight tests for display screen equipment users and contributing towards glasses required specifically for screen-based work. Every day, 250 people in the UK start to lose their sight, highlighting the importance of looking after our eye health. (@RNIB) Regular sight tests can help identify changes in our vision. What if we experienced the world through a different perspective? BRAILLED IT invites audiences to do just that, with blind and low vision young people taking control of the camera and telling their own stories. Set around the Braille Challenge, the documentary captures more than a competition. It highlights the friendships, confidence and sense of belonging that come from being part of a community where Braille literacy is celebrated and young people are recognised for their skills and achievements. By placing cameras directly into the hands of the participants, BRAILLED IT creates space for authentic voices and lived experiences to be heard. It’s a powerful example of why representation matters and how listening to communities can lead to more meaningful storytelling. Today is International Literacy Day! For 60 years, International Literacy Day has highlighted the importance of literacy as a fundamental human right. But there is still more work to do. Around the world, at least 739 million young people and adults lack basic literacy skills, while 4 in 10 children are not reaching minimum reading proficiency. This year’s @UNESCO theme, “Literacy for people, the planet and prosperity,” reminds us that literacy is about more than reading and writing. Staff reflection of 27 Years of Innovation. As we celebrate 40 years of Dolphin, we're reflecting on the people and innovations that have shaped our journey. One of our longest-serving team members, Adam, who has been with dolphin for 27 years this week, shared his thoughts on how assistive technology has evolved. "When I started back in 1999, the accessibility landscape was very different. Keeping up with the pace of these changes has been a big part of my work. My first major contribution to SuperNova was the internet updater in version 5. This meant we could send fixes and improvements to customers over the internet. Prior to that, we sent CDs through the post! Later, this system was expanded to work with the scripting system, I developed this back in version 9 as a way to further improve SuperNova functionality. This future-proofing has been invaluable in recent years, with complex, rapidly updated applications like Microsoft Teams, as we can offer rolling updates." This ensures a reliable and up to date experience for SuperNova users, enabling them to stay productive at school, work and home Reflecting on the future, Adam believes opportunities and challenges lie in balancing the potential of AI with the reliability and privacy users expect from Dolphin assistive tech. "It will be interesting to see how the current rapid development of artificial intelligence plays out. Getting the balance right between existing accessibility methods and newer AI approaches will be an exciting challenge." The expertise and dedication of Adam and the Dolphin development team continue to make technology more accessible for blind and partially sighted people.
