Few places on Earth have historically played such an important role in global trade and commerce as Samarkand. It’s an honor to be here today — not just to remember the history, but the opportunities for the future.

I don't know enough about these protests to form a generalizing opinion but this is terrible. In no way are the living circumstances of these protesters worse than young Iraqis. When they protested in 2019, not a single public office was sacked, not one store was robbed, and no monument destroyed.

Why should we still read Joseph Conrad? In Sleep After Toyle: The Three Lives of Joseph Conrad, Burak Ömer follows the exile, sailor, and novelist whose fiction foresaw 20th-century upheavals—and still helps us understand our own. Born into a Polish family driven into exile by the Russian Empire, Conrad left for the sea at 16. Two decades of voyages carried him from Marseille to the Malay Archipelago and the Congo. When he settled ashore, those experiences became the material of a literary career conducted in his third language: English. The sea gave Conrad an exacting understanding of duty, courage, and responsibility. His characters discover how fragile those commitments become when the institutions and conventions that sustain them fall away. In Lord Jim, a sailor’s abandonment of his ship becomes a question of shame that follows him long after the passengers are safe. Conrad brought the same scrutiny to the promises of progress in Heart of Darkness and Nostromo, where commerce and civilisation conceal exploitation, vanity, and the pursuit of power. He also turned his attention to the forces gathering within Europe. The Secret Agent follows a terrorist plot against London’s Greenwich Observatory; Under Western Eyes explores revolution, betrayal, and the desire for a quiet life under autocracy. Across these works, Conrad asks what remains of a person when the reassuring account they give of themselves can no longer survive their actions. A century after his death, the question remains open. Can’t believe Greeks are letting Americans claim Ancient Greece so casually whereas they would lose their shit over some stupid food invented two centuries ago within the Ottoman Empire
America was formed by a civilization that has persisted for thousands of years and which must persist for thousands more. It was the Civilization of Athens and Rome that transformed an infant seaboard republic into a continental empire.

The UK stands with the International Criminal Court and we stand united with our partners in strongly disagreeing with sanctions imposed on the Court. The ICC must be permitted to continue its critical work holding perpetrators of the most horrific international crimes to account.

I curse most tremendously the classical music slop that emerges everywhere in the form of "classic chillout", "relaxing classic" & other forms of therapeutic invasion upon the etheric castles of music. I just want to listen to a Sibelius symphony from beginning to end.

This culture of reflexive servility is really unbecoming especially in such extreme cases. The Saar Syndrome:
President Donald Trump played a historic role in advancing peace in South Asia. His timely intervention helped bring Pakistan and India back from the brink and secure a ceasefire, that is holding till today. In recognition of his outstanding contribution, Pakistan had nominated President Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize. We sincerely hope President’s efforts to promote peace and prevent conflict in our region receive due recognition this time. @realDonaldTrump @NobelPrize

Intelligence must draw on memory. The mind must not simply compile data — as an algorithm now does more quickly than we can — but recall lived experiences, which contain depths of meaning that only the human soul can recognize, and connect more deeply with the goodness of these experiences. Everything that is good begins “with the Spirit” and thus possesses a breath, a dynamism and a sense of communion that, once experienced, are engraved upon the heart. vatican.va/content/leo-xiv/e…
