At some point, we have to stop talking about Caitlin Clark as a phenomenon and start talking about her as what she has become: One of the best basketball players in the world. The crowds are real. The ratings are real. The attention she has brought to the WNBA is real. But none of that should overshadow the basketball anymore. Clark just finished her third WNBA season averaging 22.3 points and 8.3 assists per game, becoming the first player in league history to finish a season in the top three in both scoring and assists. She helped orchestrate the highest-scoring offense the WNBA has ever seen. And when the MVP votes were counted, she finished fourth in the league, behind A’ja Wilson, Olivia Miles and her own teammate Kelsey Mitchell. Think about how quickly the conversation has changed. Three years ago, the question was whether her college game would translate. Then it was whether she could handle the physicality of the WNBA. Then whether all the attention surrounding her was bigger than her actual impact on the court. We have those answers now. Clark isn’t great because she brings people into arenas. She isn’t great because millions of people watch her. And she isn’t great because she can pull up from the logo. She’s great because she controls games. The shooting gets the highlights, but the passing, pace, vision and ability to create offense are becoming just as important to who she is as a player. The celebrity came first. The superstardom followed. But now? The basketball speaks for itself.
