Proud moment as a supervisor!
Today, Yudi Zhang defended her PhD at TU/e. I've been working with Yudi and Mykola Pechenizkiy @pechenizkiy for over four years. She is not only a talented student, but also a close friend of mine. Her PhD journey went from learning agents and interpretable decision making, to causal RL, and on to self-evolving decision-making systems. The thesis cover, front and back, is a lovely personal touch — designed by Yudi herself, weaving in her own interests and passions.
Glad to see her thrive. She'll be joining TU Delft to work with Frans @faoliehoek. All the best for the next chapter!

We are thrilled to kick off the Fall 2026 AI Agent Frontier Seminar this Wed, Sept 2 at 11 AM ET! 🚀
Prof. Sharon Li (UW-Madison, ICML 2026 Chair) @SharonYixuanLi will present: "Toward Reliable Deployment of LLM Agents: From Uncertainty Quantification to Progress Advantage."
How can we tell if an LLM agent is quietly failing mid-episode during long-horizon tasks? She will explore agent Uncertainty Quantification (UQ) and how RL post-training yields a powerful implicit signal: the progress advantage.

Very interesting talk! I’ll bookmark it and watch it again.
My talk is now available on YouTube. Thanks @Cohere_Labs for hosting me and making this public.
Congratulations to Dr Ziyan Wang @ZiyanWang98 , who has passed his PhD viva with no corrections!
It has been a great pleasure to supervise Ziyan and see his work on safe and cooperative AI develop across ICML, NeurIPS, AAAI, AAMAS, TMLR, and COLM.
Many thanks to his examiners, @casdewitt Christian Schroeder de Witt and Angelo Cangelosi, for their time and thoughtful feedback.
He will soon join @MilindTambe_AI group at Harvard as a postdoc. A fantastic achievement and an exciting next step!
Before my summer travel, our group squeezed in a 20 km countryside hike 🌿🥾
By the end, everyone’s legs were sore and feet were complaining 😂. Time to work on the lab’s physical fitness as seriously as our research!
Next stops:
📍 Jun 28 – Jul 1: Bay Area (Apple Park)
📍 Jul 2 – Jul 9: Seoul (KAIST, Seoul National University & ICML)
📍 Jul 9 – Jul 13: Beijing
If you’re around, I’d be delighted to catch up and chat about human centric agentic systems, cooperative intelligence, multi agent safety or collaborations.
I was recently invited to @Google London office to attend the Google Education Leader Series.
It was inspiring to see seven education-related demos from Googlers, as well as many creative applications of AI in education. These tools showed strong potential to support both teaching and studying.
As students increasingly use AI as an interactive learning partner, I have been reflecting on an important question: what is the most irreplaceable role of an educator?
Perhaps it is no longer only about transmitting knowledge. It is also about asking the right questions, helping students develop judgement, and supporting their long-term ability to learn independently.

Excited to share our work,
EnactToM: An Evolving Benchmark for Functional Theory of Mind in Embodied Agents
Imagine an agent that infers what you're thinking from what you do, and acts accordingly, without you having to tell it. Such agents require a model of what the other mind knows. That capacity is called Theory of Mind(ToM).
Current ToM benchmarks ask agents "what does the other mind think?" and grade the answer. They do not measure whether the agent uses that belief when it has to act.
EnactToM closes this gap by evaluating functional theory of mind instead of literal. EnactToM contains multi-agent embodied tasks that require functional ToM to be successful at the task.
Every one of seven frontier models we evaluated scores 0.0% reproducible success on its hard split, whereas, these models correctly answer 45.0% of belief questions when asked directly, on the same tasks. (1/n) 🧵
Attending @AAMASConference! I’ll be at ASI & SE Workshop 25th, C-MAS 26th, and poster on 28th PM. Topics on scalable evaluation of hundreds of LLM agents, partner selection, and counterfactual effects for social dilemmas, led by @r_j_willis Stefan, Yudi, Shuqing! Come say hi!👋

🌟 Spring Season Finale: AI Agent Frontier Seminar 🌟
Software engineering is undergoing a radical shift as agents move toward autonomous self-improvement. 💻✨
For our final talk of the season, we are thrilled to host UIUC Prof. Lingming Zhang @LingmingZhang to present: "Towards Self-Evolving Software Intelligence."
Lingming’s group has pioneered LLM-based SE work adopted by Meta, Google, OpenAI, and DeepSeek. He’ll unpack the evolution of software agents, from live coding to continuous self-improvement with SWE-RL.

As AI moves from answering questions to taking complex actions, our evals are hitting a wall. The truth is: the quality of our evaluations directly shapes the quality of the agents we train. 📊🤖
We are thrilled to host Bing Liu @vbingliu (Head of Research @ Scale AI) for the next AI Agent Frontier Seminar to present: "Eval-Driven Agentic RL."
Bing will unpack the lessons learned building major benchmarks like SWE-Bench Pro and Humanity's Last Exam (HLE), and show how rubric-based reward design translates directly into better RL training.

The pendulum of AI is swinging back. As pure end-to-end behavior learning hits its limits, the field is re-integrating search and explicit reasoning. 🧠⚙️
We are incredibly honored to host MIT Prof. Leslie Kaelbling for the next AI Agent Frontier Seminar on May 1st to present: "RL: Rational Learning."
She was doing agentic AI way before it was cool. Join us as she revisits the rational-agent approach to building general-purpose, human-level intelligent robots. 🤖
