I hate whenever people who don't read correctly try to completely absolve Derrick and Eckles from their twisted feelings and actions due to Ivonne's brainwashing... It exacerbated them but those feelings about wanting to possess Penelope and cage her were already there.

Anyways, I do understand readers' conflicted feelings over the Duke or Reynold, whether they think the redemption was enough or not is personal but readers shouldn't judge Penelope's choice when she didn't magically and immediately forgive them.

All the "I'm disappointed Penelope chose to stay" comments to imply she's a coward?
Hilarious! Penelope literally unplugs herself in the penultimate chapter of the story in front of her family from the modern world, she gets the last laugh 🤷♀️
If anything, the Duke and Reynold look deeply saddened by their own past actions (or rather lack of actions when it comes to the Duke), not out of self-pity but because those actions harmed Penelope. Their apology didn't make them feel better about themselves.
