Why did tipping start as a way to reward great table service, and now the screen asks for 20% at a self-checkout kiosk, a drive-thru window, and a counter where someone just handed me a bag they didn't even pack?
We didn't ask businesses to pay their staff less and shift the wage onto us. We just kept tapping the screen because it felt rude not to.
And somehow the only thing that got more efficient was how many places found a way to put a tip screen in front of us.
There are people in this country that are paid poverty wages that are topped up by the Government, nearly 50% of which goes to a landlord to live in a former council house, and a good chunk of the rest spent on privatised public utilities.
We have to end the extraction economy.

For those who don't know, the "contract job" scam is when corporations take full time, essential positions and contract them out to a 3rd party so that they don't have to offer the employee working that job benefits and can fire them without cause by "terminating the contract."
These 3rd parties serve no function beyond being a proxy for the 1st company to hire people without technically hiring them and consume over 20% of an employees paycheck without them even knowing. It is blatantly using a legal loophole to get around laws regarding employment, but America has no interest in fixing this because it enjoys the suffering of its own people.

There's no reason a full time worker should require:
a roommate just to split rent on something basic.
Money from parents to help cover the gap.
A second job stacked on top of a full time one.
A cosigner just to qualify in the first place.
All of that just to afford one bedroom in the same city where the job actually is.
That's not a tough economy.
That's a broken one, and calling it "challenging" is just a nicer word for something that stopped functioning a while ago.

My mom's been paying out of her own retirement accounts for almost two years now.
Which means by the time she actually retires, she won't have what she thought she would.
Which means in fifteen or twenty years, I'll likely be doing the exact same thing for her.
Nobody sits you down and explains this is coming.
The system just quietly assumes a family member will absorb the cost when the time comes.
More often than not, it ends up being a daughter.
the overseas multi millionaires/billionaires probably care as much about the people living in their assets as the uk multi millionaires who invested in banana plantations cared about the people trying to live there either

I own my home outright.
Yet I pay Irwell Valley Homes around £432 a month in service charges, about £5,184 a year. Published rental data puts the average rent here at around £603 a month, for a one bed flat.
So my service charge alone is equivalent to just over three weeks of average rent, every single month.
Rent and service charges are not the same thing, of course. But when owning a mortgage-free flat costs roughly 72% of the building's average annual rent just in service charges, something has gone very badly wrong.
That may be leasehold.
It doesn't feel much like ownership. It just feels very, very wrong.
Every month that amount is debited from my salary, it reminds me of the monster leasehold has been allowed to become.

Good riddance, make sure to tax any assets he has remaining in the UK too, if the wealthiest just want to exploit our country we're better off without them, we need to go further and make sure any assets in the UK are taxed in the UK

If two BBC reporters, backed by a handful of colleagues, can track down huge people-smugglers & talk to them, how come the State couldn't catch them, with all its resources: 140,000+ police, Immigration Service, Coastguard, MI5, MI6 etc?
