A new paper presented at #ECMLPKDD2026 this week, on LLM-based playlist captioning! Pleased to share this work with my former colleagues from the music streaming service @Deezer, on a deployed system that automatically describes the "Daily Mix" playlists recommended to millions of users every day. Full paper available on arXiv.

Scoop: The AI music generator Suno was hacked. Hacker shared source code that shows how the tool was made and part of the music and podcasts that were scraped to create it. Decades worth of music, lyrics, and podcasts from YouTube, Deezer, Genius & more

So, an AI “band” who cite us as an influence (ie, it’s modelled off our music) have just overtaken us on Spotify, in only TWO months. It’s shocking, it’s disheartening, it’s insulting - most importantly - it’s a wake up call. Oppose AI music, or bands like us stop existing.

Huge congratulations to Darius Afchar, Gabriel Meseguer Brocal, Kamil Akesbi, and Romain Hennequin for winning the Best Paper Award at #ISMIR2025! 🏆 In their paper, "A Fourier Explanation of AI-music Artifacts," they tackle one of the biggest challenges in generative AI: detection. They mathematically prove that AI models like Suno and Udio leave a fundamental "fingerprint"—tiny, predictable spikes in the frequency spectrum. This allows for a simple, interpretable detector that surpasses 99% accuracy, providing a transparent alternative to current black-box systems. Groundbreaking work for audio forensics and AI ethics!

I just switched from Spotify to Deezer, and I encourage others to do the same. Spotify promotes AI music; Deezer detects & limits its spread. Here's how they compare: AI music detection ✅ Deezer: Detects AI music, including from Suno/Udio ❌ Spotify: Hasn't said it does any detection Transparency ✅ Deezer: Publishes how much AI music is uploaded (currently 28% of daily uploads 🤯) ❌ Spotify: No transparency about how much AI music is uploaded Recommendation / playlists ✅ Deezer: Removes AI music from recommendations, excludes it from editorial playlists ❌ Spotify: AI music shows up in Discover Weekly, playlists, etc. Deezer is on track to become the home of human music; Spotify seems to be all-in on AI.

As an Elon Musk biographer, I would peg his IQ as between 100 and 110. There’s zero evidence in his biography of anything higher. And I want to repeat that now, lest you think it a typo. There’s zero evidence, from his life history, of Musk having anything higher than a 110 IQ.

TikTok just open-sourced their recommender system framework (Monolith) -- and it uses Keras This means that nearly all the major recommender systems in the industry are built on Keras -- YouTube, TikTok, Spotify, Snap, X/Twitter, and many more (Grubhub...)

The Machine Learning community moved to Bluesky, and I haven't seen a place with so many ML/AI technical conversations since Twitter 2021. For all I know, these same conversations might be happening here in X, but the algorithm decided not to show them to me anymore.

When I was young I fixed my parents’ computer and now that I’m older I fix computers for my kids. Are we the only generation that knows how computers work?
