Scripture, as God-breathed revelation, provides the necessary guidance for the Church’s mission and offers an infallible standard that cannot be corrupted by personal preference or cultural pressure. More specifically, all beliefs essential to Christian faith are contained within Scripture, and no doctrine required for salvation exists outside biblical revelation. On the flip side, whatever cannot be found in Scripture, either explicitly or by necessary implication, can not, should not, and does not bind Christians to obedience. Scripture functions as the cognitive foundation of theology, characterized by its authority, clarity, and sufficiency regarding faith and morals. A critical misunderstanding on this topic is that this Christian belief was never intended to dismiss Christian tradition; rather, the Protestant Reformers viewed Scripture as the absolute norm while allowing tradition a derivative but meaningful secondary role: recognizing that early ecumenical councils and church fathers articulated biblical truth. The Reformers were steeped in the Early Church Fathers. The formal academic study of the Fathers (Patrology) was largely and almost exclusively pioneered post-Reformation by Protestants like Johan Gerhard (amongst others). This conviction concerning Scripture provided the theological fuel for the Reformation itself, functioning as its formal cause. Yet we need to guard against modern applications that distort the original intent. Some employ it to justify radical individualism where the church holds no real authority and private interpretation becomes supreme, paradoxically elevating individual autonomy over Scripture’s own authority. This is both incorrect and dangerous. By contrast, the Reformers actively engaged church fathers, councils, and creeds, as we should today, viewing historical continuity as essential both for maintaining orthodoxy and cultivating intellectual humility.
