On Tuesday, some extraordinary details emerged. Matches between Mannheim and Kaiserslautern are notoriously heated, with the two cities located relatively close to each other by German standards. Security was therefore prepared for strict searches — but so were the visiting supporters, who reportedly found an unusual way to smuggle in fireworks and explosive devices. Condoms were discovered in the toilets at the Carl-Benz-Stadion, and the explanation was far from what you might expect. “We shouldn’t be surprised that so many condoms were found in the stadium toilets,” said Mannheim’s head of public order and security. “Not because of any bizarre sexual practices, but because the fans smuggled pyrotechnics into places that we cannot access, despite all the means at our disposal.” According to the findings, supporters allegedly concealed the pyrotechnics internally to get past the strict security checks. However, the investigation also concluded that security measures had failed.
