WOW! Western New England and Mid-Atlantic gang — did y’all see an AMAZING sunset!? Blame the incoming nor’easter! This is “exhaust,” or outflow, carrying high, wispy cirrus clouds away at 30,000-40,000 feet. They’re made of ice crystals. Because they’re thin, they filter the sunlight nicely without fully blocking it. And given the western edge was over the Hudson Valley, the setting sun was able to illuminate the clouds from below. STUNNING!

Nice early-fall blow in Western Washington today! 💨 Seattle gusted to 38 mph—nothing too crazy, but pretty decent for September. Olympia (south of the track of the storm center) hit 54 mph!

The strongest gusts today--well over 50 mph!--were from the coast and into Mason & Thurston Counties. Pierce & Lewis were very blustery, too, and there is a lot of tree damage that area. The NWS has continued a WIND ADVISORY through this evening, but Seattle is NOT in it. (cont)

About 340-375M birds are predicted to migrate across the U.S. each night this weekend! Lights at night can be very disorienting to birds during their long fall migration. To help prevent deadly bird collisions, turn off or dim unnecessary lights! Graphic: CornellLab, BirdCast

Winds are beginning to calm across the South Sound and Washington coast as the low fills in. However, the damage has been done, as the low's bent-back occlusion hit Thurston County very hard, w/54 mph gusts, over 50K out of power, and a major I-5 closure. #wawx

He is not happy at the pet spa…Also incredibly big cheeks for a neutered male, but he has some Maine Coon and Scottish Fold in him. Poor Smokey, two more days buddy. He’s getting fantastic care at the spa, just a moody boy.
