"Beyond its direct effects on patient safety, ED overcrowding has profound and increasingly unsustainable consequences for the ED workforce. The persistent inability to provide timely, high-quality care due to systemic access block creates moral distress"
"The excess morbidity and mortality attributable to ED overcrowding often remains invisible to clinicians, patients’ families, and policymakers." @OttawaHospital
"It is often assumed that patients in ED waiting rooms are not seriously ill, and that long waits are inconvenient rather than dangerous, or that boarded patients receive care equivalent to that received on inpatient
wards. These assumptions are incorrect."

What an awesome birthday gift to get! I am lucky to receive an early copy of this amazing book The Casino Shift by Dr Brian Goldman. It was autographed no less with a personal message. Thank you so much to one amazing Canadian that is shedding light on emergency departments and what they do every day. @NightShiftMD
Cannot wait to see @thebarrbrothers in Ottawa next week! Please play my wife's favourite song, Never been a Captain 🙏

At least six preventable deaths and more than 30 “near-misses” occurred in Alberta emergency departments since the beginning of the year because of overcrowding, according to documents obtained by The Globe and Mail. #ableg #abpoli @globeandmail theglobeandmail.com/canada/a…
This story is sadly one of hundreds on any given day in our EDs.
I won’t mince words: treating our sick Albertans like this is INHUMANE
Albertans would not believe the conditions until they or a loved one are thrust into them.
More brave pts/families need to speak out!

ABs should remember that the triage nurse, and the overwhelmed team that showed up that day are the only ones showing up...
Has the CH CEO, Minister of Health, or Premier stepped foot in that ED after this death? (or any EDs who are struggling with severe overcrowding TODAY)

Appropriate to express condolences, this was a young man with a family and regardless of the ultimate cause of death the wait for care was unacceptable and absolutely destroys the confidence of the entire populace in Alberta in the integrity of their health care system.
I would like to extend my sincere condolences to the family and their loved ones during this difficult time.
The Minister of Hospital and Surgical Health Services, Matt Jones, has directed Acute Care Alberta to work with Covenant Health on a complete review of this matter.
Please see his statement below.

So commission an investigation, as you will, or a Coroner's Inquest but the result will be the same.
You will blame a nurse, or a doctor, or the underlying severe nature of the illness but you won't accept the accountability you deserve and you won't fix a damn thing.

People keep asking "why didn't the triage nurse put a pt with chest pain in a care space immediately?"
Let me simplify our current ED triage state in the face of SEVERE SYTEM OVERCROWDING

13 years ago Canada's ER doctors researched and advocated for solving ER overcrowding which leads to loss of human dignity, morbidity and mortality.

Bon travail! @francoislegault ctvnews.ca/montreal/article/…
This is a free country, and if we don't like our job, we can resign. If we want to move somewhere else to take a new job, that is within our rights. Which is why parts of Quebec's bill 2/#loi2 are blatantly unconstitutional, in stripping doctors of these rights @francoislegault
Hey General Secretary @francoislegault , I stopped practicing medicine in Quebec in 2007, and moved to Ontario. Why? Low pay and terrible working conditions. So, am I just looking at a fine, or should I be worried about the Secret Police? @FMOQ @FMSQ @AMUQmd @mtlgazette #loi2
