Ismael Vega, 42, of Westlake, was sentenced to 37 months in federal prison for violently attacking CHP officers during an anti-immigration law enforcement riot in downtown Los Angeles last year.
On June 8, 2025, Vega threw rocks and dropped burning debris from the Main Street 101 Freeway overpass in DTLA onto a CHP vehicle as officers were trapped below, setting the vehicle ablaze and creating a substantial risk of death or serious injury.
Vega pleaded guilty on April 29 to obstructing and interfering with law enforcement and has been ordered to pay $253,415 in restitution. This incident stood out during a time of enormous violence against law enforcement.
Those who attack our brave officers protecting public safety will face federal prison time for their crimes. Let this be a warning to others who think they can act without consequences.

What I saw on the bodycam footage is disturbing and tragic. The Chief and I agreed that it was important to release the bodycam footage swiftly. While the investigation is ongoing, I am very concerned about why shots were fired and Jameson was killed. This shooting makes clear that while LAPD provides officers with written guidance on the use of force and pets, this is not enough.
I have directed the Police Commission President and the Chief to examine the Department's Use of Force policy on Dog Encounters to determine best practices from around the country, and use this opportunity to update the LAPD's overall tactics, policies, and training related to use of lethal force to increase safety for everyone – officers, Angelenos and their pets.

This dog was suffering on Skid Row yesterday. No food, no water. There was an owner and 2 friends on drugs that wouldn't let the volunteer take the dog to safety. This morning, all three of the people OD'ed and died and the dog is missing. I hold @MayorOfLA responsible.
