Unarmed. 17‑year‑old. Black. Killed by Austin police at a neighborhood park after officers claimed they were responding to a “gun” call. It was stated that the 3:51 a.m. 911 call came from this teens own phone. Body‑camera footage shows officers ordering him to keep his hands up. He lifts his shirt and reaches toward his waistband. Three officers open fire, then shoot again as he tries to move. He dies on the ground. No gun. Only a water bottle tucked into his waistband. Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis has already claimed this was “suicide by police.” That framing excuses lethal force instead of asking why a distressed Black child was met with bullets instead of help. All three officers have been placed on administrative leave. We extend our condolences to this 17‑year‑old’s family, whose child has been killed and whose name has not even been released to the public. This family deserves answers, real accountability, and a system that values Black children’s lives more than police narratives.
