Reading Proust and shaking my head so the other spa goers know I’m not a sicko that stuck in the past and obsessed with a courtesan called Odette. In search of lost Time

Been reading Ulysses on my old kindle whilst I was in Bali. Can’t wait for my physical copy to arrive and to squeeze the beauty of the language from the physical copy as I am absorbing it into my consciousness.

one of my favourite bits in ellmann’s james joyce — Beckett was addicted to silences, and so was Joyce; they engaged in conversations which consisted often of silences directed toward each other, both suffused with sadness, Beckett mostly for the world, Joyce mostly for himself.

A last memento from a wonderful two weeks in Bali. Drinking coffee processed through the anus whilst reading Stephen’s literary theories pouring forth from his verbal orifice in much the same way in chapter 9 of Joyce Ulysses. Scylla and Charybdis.

Now into chapter 9 of Ulysses after some preservation. Loving the last 3 chapters and this one about the bard and Hamlet. Starting to see the greatness shine through.

'I suddenly realized I was on the other side. What I saw was an unruly mob of self-indulgent middle-class hooligans. When I asked my friends what they wanted, what were they trying to achieve, all I got back was this ludicrous Marxist gobbledegook. I was disgusted by it, and thought there must be a way back to the defence of western civilization against these things. That’s when I became a conservative. I knew I wanted to conserve things rather than pull them down.' Roger Scruton

We had an Irishman on the desk called Declan, a great gentle giant of a man from a farming family in Tipperary, who’d been brought up to believe that a pint of Guinness had to be left to settle before you touched it, and that anyone who rushed one deserved what was coming to them. One afternoon in October ‘87 he’d just been handed a pint in the pub across the road when someone ran in shouting that the market was falling off a cliff. We all went straight back to the office. Declan stayed where he was and waited for his pint to settle. By the time he got back to his desk he’d lost the bank a fortune, and by five o’clock he’d lost his job. He went home to the farm not long after, and as far as I know never set foot in a dealing room again. He told me years later it was the best pint he ever had.
Mark Zuckerberg pretending to enjoy Guinness is my new favourite thing.
