For anyone wondering what the turtle is about, when I was 13 I found a turtle ring box at a dollar store. I bought it and gave it to my parents and told them that if a man ever came asking for my hand in marriage, to give him the ring box so that I would know he had their permission.

The cute little turtle was the sign to you that I had said yes. It was strange to wait on God and know that I couldn’t manufacture peace in my heart. God is God and His ways are so perfect. Your marriage is a wonderful picture of Christ and the church.

When Kyle and I were dating, he asked for my dad's permission to propose. For whatever reason, my dad said that he felt like the Lord was telling him that we needed to wait. It was confusing for everyone. My dad wanted to say yes, but he knew that it would be disobedient. So we waited. And while it didn't make sense at the time, looking back, it was very good seeing how Kyle responded. It is very good to marry a man who is willing to put himself under authority. It is very good to be a part of a local church. These are crucial protections for a wife.

And to finish the story, after a few months, my dad got the green light, gave his permission, and then Kyle and I got married 13 weeks later.

We went through seminary with this family. The past couple of days have been filled with such sorrow and heartache and baffled prayers of "Lord, have mercy." They came to Kyle's surprise 40th birthday party and it filled me with such joy. We saw them at a Psalm sing and then they had us for dinner a few weeks later. They talked about their upcoming trip to SD. No one knows their day and hour. I am sobered and humbled and so sad.
