ALT Woman on Fire emerged after 20 years of nothing but black ink on white paper, hints of red and smoldering like a Phoenix rising from the ashes. She lay amidst layers of paper hidden and at the same time always speaking her mind. Her buried feminism is much like the silence of generations of women unable to speak their mind – bound by servitude and slavery, bound by custom and tradition. Her heart carried like armor, her body reflecting the ambiguity of an outer world, but the blackness of her face mirroring in my mind the women who knew emancipation from within – their strength moving through unbearable circumstances, institutional injustices and historical moments. These women, challenging paradigms and with dynamic power, and making the way for an emerging freedom to which we are all called. Surpassing words. Surpassing time.
