I wrote about Gloria Steinem. Yes, flawed, yes, often problematic. But those trashing her - come back when you have done as much for women and girls as she did: unherd.com/2026/09/the-glori…

Where to even start. An incredibly brave 15 yr old girl kidnapped by a highly dangerous man. Depositing her DNA in the van because she expected to be killed. 😢 Life sentence with a minimum 8 years to be served. I mean, seriously? He’s killed before. telegraph.co.uk/gift/8d6b8c5…

This is just heading even further down road to fantasy economics. We already rely more on wealthiest than any comparable economy to fund our state spending & our tax free personal allowance is already generous compared to other similar spending economies. Lowest paid workers already pay less direct tax than almost any other major developed nation.
Replying to @DanNeidle
Reform's claim the tax cut costs £17.7bn Compare with the HMRC "ready-reckoner", which shows the dynamic effect of various tax changes. Increase from £12,570 to £15,000 = 19.33% increase. So the HMRC projection is just under £20bn

Josh Shepperd, associate professor of Media Studies at the University of Colorado: “In many ways, the culture at Bluesky is more supportive and cordial than Academic Twitter... Bluesky feels very much like an information bubble in which academics can communicate with each other in specific ways without external scrutiny.” A safe space from external scrutiny. Lovely if you echo the prevailing woke dogma; a toxic hellhole if you stray from it. Famously, the hallmark of robust academic inquiry.
Did the exodus of scholars from X after Musk's purchase contribute to 'groupthink' within UK HE? Does it help to explain today's polarised academy? Some interesting reflections from scholars and HR experts on those questions, plus whether 'Academic Twitter' is back timeshighereducation.com/new…

‘Hong Kong 2026’ My cartoon on Joshua Wong, Pro-democracy activist, faces life sentence in second case under Beijing’s national security law. 《香港2026》 漫画记录香港现状。黄之锋被莫须有之“勾结外国势力危害国家安全”陷罪,最高刑罚可囚终身。这便是中国治下的香港,一片死城。

Africa’s lack of development is so confounding we are now at the stage of looking under the sofa for ‘injustices’ that might spark joy. You cannot flatten a 3D sphere into a 2D rectangle without creating distortions. It’s really disturbing that the UN is now a place for gimmick votes like this.
UN General Assembly votes overwhelmingly in support of African resolution on accurate maps. The vote addresses the longstanding injustice of Mercator-based maps, which distort Africa's size, showing it as much smaller than it really is.

This is a great piece from Sarah. The backlash against the reporting about Arday is a reminder that the attachment to free speech (even reporting quite clearly in the public interest) is worryingly thin in the UK, including among people who think of themselves as liberals.

Only thing I'd add, which keeps getting lost in this, is the profoundly pernicious effect people like Arday have on the parents of nonverbal autistic kids. They are *very* susceptible to this sort of bullshit -- see facilitated communication, Woody Brown, and on and on
This editorial is appalling. It omits any mention of Arday's serial fabulism or his attempt to intimidate -- and direct law enforcement against -- a journalist investigating his misconduct. It appears to characterize his fabrication of academic credentials and biographical details as aspects of "how Arday conducted aspects of his personal life." The editorial also ignores that his plagiarism is an established fact that any truth-seeking publication could itself confirm by referencing publicly available documents. Instead, Nature chooses to ignore the observable realities, while inviting readers to conclude that the charges were trivial or false. The British tabloid press is disgraceful. This story was grossly over-covered and the attention it attracted surely reflected racial resentments. But it's crazy that the editorial leadership of a flagship scientific journal would publish a willfully dishonest polemic on a culture war controversy. Nature is effectively advertising a willingness to prioritize its political sympathies over factual accuracy. That undermines its own more essential work -- along with the broader project of cultivating public trust in, and agreement upon, scientific truths.

Reasonable attack line from this Tory MP. How can he credibly attack post-Thatcher consensus when he was a minister, a Cabinet minister and a *Blairite* Cabinet minister in that time? And if Manchesterism is the future, that was a product of George Osborne?
Incoherent start from the PM. Blaming the last 40 years, when he was in Government for part of them, while complaining about centralisation of power after serving as a devolved Mayor – a role created by the last Conservative Government.

Deranged leftists are gloating because she was a "bank vice president." Deranged rightists are gloating because she chose girlbossing over being a stay-at-home mom. I maintain my position that these two loathsome contingents need to have a big hate orgy and solve the fertility crisis (and their own inceldom) by producing a generation of politically neutral normies that hate their parents.

It’s really important that society has institutions that can be trusted to tell the truth and to be fair and reasonable. This editorial, which launders the reputation of an obvious conman, makes clear that Nature is no longer such an institution. What’s left?
Editorial: The death of Jason Arday must prompt deep reflection go.nature.com/4xu6cnq
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
Arday was an academic fraud whose life story was fake. Editorial falsely treats former as unproven allegation, omits mention of latter, defames those who covered the scandal as racist. Calls him "autistic Black scholar" despite no proven autism diagnosis. substack.com/@nathancofnas/… theguardian.com/education/ng-i… thetimes.com/uk/education/a… news.educ.cam.ac.uk/230223-jason-a… bbc.com/news/articles/… bbc.com/news/uk-englan… youtube.com/shorts/4kLRJvR… youtube.com/watch?v=g28uXe… youtube.com/watch?v=FA78tV… x.com/benryanwriter/… x.com/benryanwriter/…

Beijing’s unjust prosecution of Joshua Wong is an appalling abuse of power. Everyone who truly cares about democracy should be proud to stand with him and the people of Hong Kong. Advocacy for freedom is not a crime and the international community must immediately demand his release.
Joshua Wong, the former teenage activist who became a key leader of Hong Kong's democracy movement, faces the prospect of many more years in prison after he pleaded guilty to the latest national security case brought by prosecutors. cnn.it/4xdqsZO

Burnham literally just said he wanted to spend even more money rather remove the barriers to young people’s employment his own party has built! Just using the word ‘invest’ as a synonym for ‘spend’ fools no-one. Cut Labour’s massive tax burden which destroyed entry level jobs.

China just showed every country what happens if you try to take your own company back. A year ago, the Dutch government seized control of Nexperia from its Chinese owner, Wingtech, over fears about tech and production moving to China. Beijing's response: export controls on the chips every car and appliance runs on. Automakers felt it within weeks. The Netherlands backed off. China lifted the curbs. But the pressure never stopped. This week, a Chinese court froze $300 million of Nexperia's own assets inside China. Fresh leverage. Same fight. Nexperia's China unit is now building its own supply chain from scratch, new wafers, new packaging, no need for the Dutch side at all. This is the model now. Try to claw back a China-linked company, and Beijing squeezes global supply until the rest of the world starts pressuring your government to fold.

Britain ‘hog-tied’ to China for a third of wind power. More than a third of offshore wind farm capacity in Britain will be produced by sites linked to Chinese companies by next year, including organisations blacklisted by the US over ties to the military. thetimes.com/article/3518827…? China Three Gorges, which owns a stake in Moray East wind farm off the Scottish coast, is on a Pentagon list of companies considered to be under the control of the Chinese military.
