To celebrate Labour Day, I finished the design of @museandmate - a practice journal for seriously enthusiastic musicians. It’s 1 year+ of design labour. If production and shipping go as planned, it will be ready for sale around Christmas! A sneak peak 👇👀

Today we shipped one of the biggest projects I’ve worked on in my almost 6 years at Shopify: Shopify Marketing Tools. Everything (like, for real) you need to grow your email list and market to them, built right into Shopify.

During the office hour we got a lot of questions about how to even start bridging the gap between disciplines. We all want the other disciplines to appreciate what we do, designers and developers alike. But influencing doesn’t happen by accident.

To influence others and get alignment, someone has to be willing to go out of their comfort zone and intentionally ask what others care about and understand why they matter. It takes intention, humility, curiosity, and an genuine interest in seeing from a different perspective.

Another key thing to do is to always bring an ENG partner along (among all kinds of stakeholders) so design is never the only team that’s thinking about this problem at any given point.

Love this take, but suggest that we do both. Design it early, warm it up with stakeholders, and then redesign it to match learnings.

Fwiw design early is super important if we can be clear what will end up being an artifact and what’s the thing you do to help you think the problem through. It’s a distilling process. So when it comes to actual building time, the essence of the solutions remain.
