Full list of NYT's 100 best shows of the century. Game of Thrones and Schitt's Creek are way too high, Deadwood, The Shield, and Halt and Catch Fire are too low, and Luck should have been on the list. But the Top 20 is, on the whole, good.

This is an exceptionally simple and clever approach to replication. Because Google Trends data is randomly sampled from the universe of Google searches, you can test the robustness of studies that rely on Google Trends by simply applying them to the data for the same query run the next day. True to form, the effect sizes from these replications are smaller than the original, consistent with selection on significance and/or researcher degrees of freedom.
🧵 New DP from I4R co-director Lester Lusher, with @Sonia00621, @IslamShafi21676, Huda Osman & Jacob Stenstrom (Pitt): "When Samples Shape Significance." What happens when you re-estimate published results using fresh draws of the same data? Some evidence from Google Trends!

I made a game to teach myself art history. And now I’m sharing it here, for free. It’s a trivia game that shows a painting, then asks you to guess when it was made and who painted it. You can play with friends or by yourself. I designed it to highlight the relationship between the spirit of an era and its paintings. Playing the game, for example, will give you a visceral sense for how different the energy was in Europe when Impressionism was popular in the 1880s vs. when Cubism was coming into fashion in the 1910s. The shift in style is a reflection of how the tectonic plates in society were shifting in the years before World War I. Similar themes show up throughout human history. That’s why the answer page is filled with so many rabbit holes, such as Wikipedia pages about: - The painting itself - The year it was painted - The artist - The people who inspired the artist - Popular works of art created at the time And also a timeline of the artist’s life and a guide to looking at the painting. Here’s the site: canon.perell.com

By far my favourite Scotland vs Brazil story is the referee saying “Good luck, may the best team win” to both captains before the game in 1982 and Graeme Souness replying “I fucking hope not”

I was so frustrated that I couldn't get more than 34 wins in the 38-0 game, so I wrote an algorithm to keep playing it — always picking the highest-rated option, unless an 86+ rated full-back was available. After 189 953 runs, I finally completed it.

Your plan seems inferior to "eigengrades" (xitter.cf/joshgans/status/203259…) since your plan fails to correct for the perverse incentive to take classes where the other students aren't very good.
Behold Eigengrades! @skominers and I have a new preliminary paper out that looks at the issues of cross-course comparability in grades. This was a project motivated by Harvard's proposal to cap the number of As in each course to counter grade inflation. 👇

the 9-Euro Ticket increased train trips by about 35%, but reduced car traffic by only 1–5%, implying limited car-to-rail substitution. The additional train demand worsened rail service quality: the share of delayed trains rose by 30%, with spillovers to long-distance trains.

At least they show you how many reviews an establishment wanted to have removed. Which says more about the establishment than the reviews in many cases.
